Capella Ubud, one of the most amazing experiences in the last period. Great location, great surrounding, incredible architecture, if we can call like this the tent/glamping experience. Sleeping in a luxurious tent, surrounded by the wild nature sounds was wow. F&B, the treatment, the food, the drinks selection, all amazing. Go for the rum infused with ginger. Own pool, amenities, all great. The most amazing staff ever, very supportive, attentive and helpful. The restaurants and the 10 courses dinner at Api Jiwa, together with chef Arvie Delvo, out of this world. Hope we can come back, soon!

We chose to stay at Capella Ubud largely because of its famous design, the 'tents' tumbling down a river valley. This extraordinary fever-dream of design and engineering did not disappoint, a rare example of hotel architecture that lives up to the marketing images. Each tent is a little masterpiece of thoughtful design. The sheltered terrace with outdoor shower is wonderful, but then you realise that the walls have little peephole windows you can open to take advantage of the view while showering. And then you realise that not only do the toilet and indoor shower also have these peephole windows, you can open them in a line and see the view from the- literal and metaphorical- throne. One thing to note with the throne is that privacy is via a black shower curtain, which can be a bit intimate even for very happily married couples. Our tent made us feel completely secluded- there was nothing between us and the jungle. Our private plunge pool was bracing after all the overnight rain but a superb start to each morning. For light sleepers, pack ear plugs- the canvas roof is romantic but noisy during a tropical downpour! Everyone talks about mobility but it is definitely something to be aware of and check with the hotel. We had 145 steps from our tent to breakfast, with no handrails and often wet. It was fine, but note it. Staff are consistently excellent- including in pre-stay correspondence. Somehow within hours of arriving staff we had never met not only knew our names, but our scheduled activities for the day- however we probably don't need to be checked on so regularly during meals! Staff often seemed horrified that we may need to open our own umbrellas. A special thanks to Koroming who kept our arrangements flowing smoothly, even when we consistently failed in basic reading comprehension and understanding of linear time. The spa treatment, Apu Jiwa, and range of curated activities were all uniformly superb. Highly, highly recommended property.

This is a hotel that is not for everyone. As for us, we love hotels designed by Bill Bensley, such as the Capella: it’s a place where attention to detail, philosophy, and design have reached a unique level of perfection. The ambiance and aesthetics of the property exceed imagination, offering constant delight or perpetual amazement. The restaurants are good, and the staff is very (perhaps too) attentive, interrupting the meal several times to check if everything is fine and if you’re enjoying it 🙂, but it’s genuinely sincere. However, there is a downside: due to its integration with nature and its location on a slope descending toward the river, the hotel has a large number of steep stairs made of small, uneven steps in rather dark stone. In keeping with the authenticity of the place, these stairs are without handrails, and there are many of them. On rainy nights, it can be quite easy to miss a step, especially for elderly guests or those with a baby. For such individuals, you need to have steady footing, stamina, and a healthy heart. So, if you, like me, do not fall into this category, it’s best to request a villa at the top of the Property and avoid the river tents (95 steps just ro reach the still steep main pathway). That being said, this issue did not manage to diminish our enthusiasm for this truly special hotel.

We stayed for 2 nights in the Capella Ubud - 1 night in a River Tent (The Princess Tent) and 1 night in a Keliki Valley Tent (The Photographer's Tent). It is such a unique experience, staying in a luxury tent in the middle of the forest. The tents are very clean well-appointed, with all the modern amenities - surprisingly barely any insects! In particular, the view from the pool in our Keliki Valley Tent was spectacular, a sight to behold. What sets Capella Ubud apart are its staff and service (special shout-out goes to our Capella Culturist, Sony, who escorted us to our rooms and even to the Camp Post upon our checkout). The staff are attentive, and know you by name. I was very impressed by how I sat down for breakfast and the staff at Mads Lange knew which tent I was from and also my numerous dietary restrictions. Very seamless! Before I arrived, the Capella Ubud team helped me sort out my transfers and meals. They recommended a private in-tent BBQ experience, which was amazing and such a unique experience (William, our server, and Ega, our chef, were great!) Some element of fitness is needed here, especially if your tent is further down. There are quite a number of slopes. Our first tent, the Princess Tent, is located near to the river which is further away from the Camp Post, so there was quite a bit of trekking involved. Kudos to the team for managing to bring our heavy luggage to our tents (holding it on their shoulders) and doing the housekeeping service!

Stayed at Capella Ubud from 31Oct to 3Nov. Short weekend stay. Our second Capella experience. The first was in Singapore. We were so impressed then that we decided to try a Capella during our Bali trip. We were not disappointed. If anything, this even better the Singapore experience. For the word go the service is tip top. And I mean very top of tip top. There’s a certain sincerity from the team here that they really wanted to provide a good experience. Everywhere you go you see smiling friendly team of people. The tent we had was fantastic. The toilet is something else. Big, spacious, clean, comfortable… everything you come to expect you get . The restaurants serve good food. The officers tent served good coffee and patties for afternoon tea. The spa and massage we had was incredible. The gym was nice but the running machines were occupied when I went. Blessing in disguise as I ran at the rice field instead. But the best route for running but certainly beat a running machine. In summary. Absolutely nothing I can complain about. I must commend the team. The service level is the ultimate. The best I have ever experienced. Not service for sake of service but service because they want to ensure the guest gets a good experience . Thank you .

Since Capella Ubud’s open, it has found a place on my must-stay list. As one of the hotel brands I trust implicitly, Capella’s service, facilities, and dedication to exploring local culture have consistently provided me with some of my most cherished travel memories. Capella Ubud, however, held an even deeper allure. Its designer, Bill Bensley, dedicated the hotel’s theme to honoring the explorers of the Age of Discovery—a concept that, I believe, would captivate any traveler with a spirit of adventure. Service: I admire the finely tuned balance of service at Capella Ubud—discreet yet ever-present, a quiet presence that leaves one feeling revitalized. As a sanctuary in the jungle, the hotel preserves a respectful privacy between guests, as well as between guests and staff. Yet the team at Capella Ubud has a gift for appearing at just the right moment, anticipating my needs in a way that astonished me. Whether attending to the room, arranging activities, or simply attending to the rhythms of daily leisure, every member of the staff carried themselves with the ease of a familiar friend. Each detail was thoughtfully attuned, and one could sense that they took genuine joy and pride in their work, as if belonging to Capella were a point of honor. Facilities: Impeccable. Upon entering Capella Ubud, it seemed that Bali’s bustling world had been momentarily enveloped by a "wave" of tranquility, with only the soft murmur of breeze, birdsong, the distant chime of a temple bell, and the fragrant mystery of jungle blooms remaining. Our initial concerns about potential inconveniences in the jungle setting quickly vanished, as the hotel’s meticulous design catered to both aesthetic beauty and functional excellence. Even the usual worries about insects, often a concern in the jungle, never crossed our minds—Capella’s commitment to pest control was meticulous. Among the many highlights, their copper bathtub remains unforgettable; it was the most comfortable of any luxury hotel bath I’ve experienced. The bathroom opened directly into the surrounding jungle, so that one could soak amid the greenery, surrounded by birdsong and floral scents. Though each villa includes its own private pool, we couldn’t resist the allure of the main pool. Framed by dense rainforest, it offered a profound sense of the vibrancy and serene strength that defines Capella Ubud. Cuisine: Both Mads Lange and Api Jiwa restaurants impressed us deeply. Api Jiwa, a Japanese Omakase experience offered only at dinner, was particularly remarkable. Surrounded by rainforest on three sides, Api Jiwa uses local ingredients to craft international flavors, evoking the resourcefulness of explorers cooking their native dishes with ingredients found in the forest. The staff was attentive, displaying a warmth and dedication that made each meal feel like a tribute to hospitality itself. Experiences: We participated in two activities during our stay. The first was the Cleansing Ritual at the hotel’s own temple. Nestled in a secluded valley on the property, this century-old temple is still visited by villagers, who make their way down hotel-laid pathways to partake in daily worship. On arrival, along with the sounds of the jungle, I could hear faint celebratory music emanating from the temple. Here, guests and villagers exist just a step apart yet maintain a gentle equilibrium—Capella Ubud’s design strives to achieve just such a balance, harmonizing with local culture while remaining respectfully separate. Our second experience was a sunrise journey to the volcano. We set off in a vintage Land Rover as the hotel’s guide prepared everything for an intimate sunrise coffee in a secluded viewing spot. From this vantage, we took in Mount Batur and its lake, watching as dawn painted the sky. The scene was breathtaking—mountains, rice terraces, and village rooftops bathed in the light of the rising sun. A fine mist hung lazily over the landscape, as the forested slopes shifted into shades of pink and translucent green, imbuing the air with a sense of mystery. Birds soared across the sky, wisps of smoke rose from village hearths, and a profound serenity settled over the valley.

Unique and difficult location, superbly done

It’s only just off a ‘main’ road through a village but within a hundred yards you are swallowed by rainforest, and seemingly cut off from all those things you want to be cut off from. Zero trees were cut down to build the resort, so there’s a real feeling of immersion into the environment. Our room had en suite bath and shower, outdoor shower, outdoor seating area, and steps down to an unheated jaccuzi with loungers. We walked across a short suspended bridge to get to our room. Service is impeccable, gym is well-equipped, and the chefs cook dishes with real flavour, which isn’t a given at even top hotels. Only caveat isn’t really a caveat, just a warning: some of the nicest rooms are furthest away from the restaurant. We had a 124-stair (ie stone steps) walk up to get to any of the facilities. Other rooms (less good view, smaller) involve a far shorter walk with few stairs.
