Make sure to get a room with its own bathroom not the private detached version as it's awkward to see other guests in their robes.
Waiting till 9am for breakfast is pretty late for most people and even then it was just one hot dish. We could've just eaten some fruit or toast hours earlier

I wished there was a heavier blanket. Even as an option in the closet! Our bathroom was unattached and a little down the hallway and very cold but it felt real to the time period of the house so I didn’t mind too much. The breakfast was wonderful! I enjoyed staying immensely and would definitely stay again and recommend it!

We have stayed here several times for our anniversary. It has always been wonderful but this time it was a bit disappointing. The sheets were clean but the blankets did not smell clean at all. The bathroom was not clean either. Yes, we realize everything is old, but the tub and the sink both had a layer of soap scum b that could be deep cleaned and removed. We will probably not return next year as we feel the quality of our stays has gone down.

We had a 3 day, 2 night staycation in Coeur d’Alene and decided the Blackwell Hotel would be a unique experience. Overall, we had a good stay but there were a couple drawbacks that ended up really affecting our enjoyment during our stay.
The Good
• Staff was great. 100% of our interactions with the staff were pleasant and friendly.
• Breakfast was hearty and delicious. A scrambled egg casserole (eggs and ham the first day, second day was eggs, sausage and potatoes) with assorted fruits, bagels, and a variety of breads. Made fresh with minimal packaged items.
• The property is very charming and gives the historic charm and ambiance we were looking for.
• Rooms were clean and comfortable.
Some quirks
Because the house is older, there are a few quirks that make it different. These mostly didn’t bother us but they may for others:
• Loud wooden stairs to get to all of the rooms in the main house. Probably the loudest I’ve heard.
• Lack of temperature control. Our room was VERY warm the first night we were there. Thankfully, we are the type of people to sleep with the window open in December and that made it tolerable for us.
The Drawbacks
• The tub/shower in our room was challenging to say the least. The clawfoot tub is beautiful but not very practical. There is nowhere to put the items you need for the shower and the wrap around shower curtain clings to you the whole time you’re showering. The water pressure is also quite weak. All that added to up getting out of the shower and not really feeling clean. Also, stepping in and out of the tub would be almost impossible for anyone with mobility issues. I almost went bottoms up myself.
• The worst part, at least for us, were the private events that were scheduled during our stay. These events were held in the main part of the house where it was impossible to get to and from our room without passing through them. There was a wedding the first night and a private Christmas dinner the second night. We were not told about them until the day of (would like to have known at booking) and they greatly affected our stay. There were hours blocked out in which we were technically “allowed” to come and go as we please but we felt it would be extremely awkward to interrupt these events by coming and going. This left us working our evenings around these events and making sure we were off property instead of being able to enjoy a cozy and relaxed B&B. There was a pool table and games but we only saw them in the morning while eating breakfast because the private events took up the majority of both of the evenings of our stay. This negatively affected us because it meant we had to be away instead of staying and relaxing in the common space. At that point, it became more of a place to sleep and not much more.
We probably would not stay here again, especially not for a stay in which we were hoping to relax in the hotel. It’s a shame because the staff really did do everything they could to make it great!

Our second visit to this lovely Victorian bed and breakfast. We stayed in room 8 in the carriage house. It was a lovely, comfortable room. Only downside were the hedges that completely blocked out the window We appreciated the great shower and cute little refrigerator. The main house is just lovely and we appreciate how difficult it must be to upkeep an old home. The staff were somewhat aloof and with the exception of a caretaker, he was very warm, friendly and helpful. Located a few short blocks to resort.

Six couples rented rooms for a friend's birthday. Check-in process was easy and it was fun to see everyone's different rooms. We had room #4. The house could use a bit of TLC as others have mentioned, but nothing that ruined our stay. There is plenty of space for everyone and lots of different sitting/conversation areas. The main floor was sweltering hot and there was now way to adjust it. So it was pretty uncomfortable. We weren't in the house much as we left around 5pm for dinner and didn't return until after 10pm. It's an old house so everything is creaky. The quieter I tried to be, the louder it seemed. Maybe some carpet lining the stairs would help keep the noise down a bit. Our room had a very comfortable bed and a little sitting area. The bathroom was functionable, but it is a bit weird showering in a clawfoot tub. There was nowhere to put your soap or shampoo etc. And the shower curtain sticks to you. No biggy as it was one night. I would have preferred the fireplace room as it has a regular shower, but it was booked by a couple not in our group. The breakfast was under whelming. It was scrambled eggs with ham in them (which was good), waffles, some sweet breads, bagels and some fruit. It would have been better to have plain scrambled eggs (for those that don't like ham) some sausage and bacon and some type of breakfast potatoes. It's nice they offer it, but it could be improved. Nobody in our group was very impressed. All in all it was fun and Coeur d'Alene is a fun town. You can walk to everything. It would be really fun for a family to rent the whole house for a holiday etc.

The beds were very comfortable and soft! Rooms are spacious. Love the historic B&B's. Easy walk to lots of shops and restaurants. Breakfast was very good. The gas fire pit wasn't working which would have been nice. Quiet. Carriage house rooms take a lot of time to warm up.

Great hotel. Super soft beds. Jennifer who helps coordinate the rooms and weddings was amazing. Super helpful, great ideas of things to do around CDA, and she was overall awesome. Will definitely stay here again. Planning on having my wedding here in October 2024 and super excited.

This review could be very long, so I think I will do a + and - list instead. Keep in mind we stayed in Room 3 in the main mansion at the rear of the house on floor 2. Here goes:
Pros (+):
Location is walkable to downtown.
Price per night was reasonable.
The room was large.
The bed was comfortable.
Shower was large and lots of water hot.
Road noise was minimal.
There was water, coffee, tea available in the kitchen.
There was something for breakfast at 9 a.m.
The common area indoors (living room, parlor, billards) were comfortable.
There were no events going on in the backyard, so it was pretty quiet.
The digital entrance keypad worked fine.
Nice twinkly lights on the fence out back.
Cons (-) or Less than Great:
The house looks like it needs TLC. Sure it's old, but it needs exterior paint, the bulbs in our bathroom were mostly burnt out. The windows did not all have screens on them.
If you don't have streaming service/subscriptions forget watching TV. No local channels, but LOTS of news channels through Roku.
The exterior seating, firepit area, hot tub, deck table and chairs were not cleaned, or in some cases even set up to use. There were trashcans in front of the hot tub and the lounger by the firepit was dirty and rolled up. It was a shame, because it would have been lovely to sit out by the fire or use the hot tub.
The breakfast that was supposed to be "fabulous", was just a basic breakfast. Not fabulous. Honestly, the free breakfast at Residence Inn or Hampton Inn is better. I am not exagerating.
I was most disappointed in the place because we always try to support local, small boutique inns and hotels. This was advertised as that, but it is not. It is more like an Air BnB that does events and when there are no events they rent out the rooms. I feel this is the major problem.....false advertising of what the experience actually will be.
So, if you like a boutique, intimate, hosted hotel or inn this is not the place for you. If you need a room for the night...sure. If you want to have an event and have the whole place to your group, that would be great too.

The Blackwell house was beautiful but did lack charm. The grounds from a distance were well kept but looking closer did need some work - the dryer vent from the basement was a fire hazard, dead shrubs and the front door was locked and not welcoming. The ground floor could have been decorated with more of a 1912 feel - a pool table in the parlor? The kitchen area was clean and organized but the common microwave was filthy and needed to be replaced. The North Travelers suite was very out of place for the home. The decor was ridiculous and the bed and bath linens worn. Very difficult to shower in the bathroom setup. Not being a bed and breakfast expert, I feel the place could use some help. I did feel safe and parking was easy. We never ate breakfast ( serving started at 9am ) as we had early plans all week. Can’t complain about the weather- it was fabulous!! Beautiful town and lake area…….
