The Alohilani experience is good on first impression. The lobby and ground floor common areas are very nice. The check-in process and front-desk service is absolutely top-notch.
We also had a positive experience with the hotel's amenities. The pool area and longboard club are phenomenal. They are thoughtfully designed, the staff was on-point, and the food was excellent.
For the most part, we enjoyed our stay.
However, the glaring problem is the quality of the rooms. We stayed on one of the top floors in the beach-side tower. When we checked in, our room felt damp and the air circulation seemed limited compared to other resorts we have stayed in Waikiki. The hallways were similarly humid feeling and there were several rooms with uncollected room service/food items left outside the doors.
The front-desk staff kindly relocated us to a different room on a similar level. The replacement room was an improvement, but it still lacked a fresh smell and its overall cleanliness was not up-to-par given the price-point (noticeably the gaps in the carpet between the main room area and the bathroom and the shower grout).
We ended up cancelling the final 2 of our 4 reserved nights to stay in a different hotel in Waikiki that was priced similarly but had significantly nicer rooms.
The Alohilani has all the right "bones" but the tired rooms and the seemingly aging air circulation system (and super slow elevators) need a refresh to justify the premium price one pays to stay here.
We would come back in a heartbeat if these items were addressed.

*WARNING* The staff at this hotel stole my expensive perfume and skincare right from my room! My experience here was far from acceptable. First, they couldn't locate our reservation, and after finally checking in, we had to navigate the confusing layout without any guidance or map. When I reported the missing items, the response was non-existent, and there's been no follow-up since. We chose to leave early and found a much better experience across the street for the remainder of our time in Oahu. I am genuinely disappointed with the level of professionalism displayed by the staff here. I have never had an experience like this in a hotel before, and I feel compelled to warn others.
The rooms are also very outdated, with grime and dirt still left behind on counters and showers. Rooms are so thin you can hear everything from neighbors. Complete nightmare experience. Do not stay here.

Front desk staff here are amazing and wonderful.
The rooms are recently refurbished.
Sound easily bleeds through the walls and windows.
Balcony railing is flimsy aluminum.
My biggest regret is the bait and switch with the pool.
The photos display tranquil relaxing and calm environment. When we visited the pool, there was a DJ blasting music, half eaten food on nearly every surface and unattended kids screaming and running around all over the place.
The pool was packed and there was no chill.
We could not enjoy this amenity.
TL;DR;
Location and lobby could not be beat.
Front desk staff are wonderful and kind.
The rooms and infrastructure need some love.
There is no chill at the pool - you will not find the relaxation / serenity as advertised.

I was a bit unsure about the hotel after reading some of the reviews, however I was not displeased with the stay and would come back again next time I return to Waikiki. The hotel is in a great location and right across the road from the beach. We booked a Ocean view King room and on check in were appointed a twin bed interconnecting room overlooking Diamond Head that had ocean views of that side of the hotel . A thing to note about this resort is that there are 2 accommodation towers, which are beachfront and the second one back from the beach is the main tower . The room we got was in the main tower and was quite old and the hallways do smell musty and so did our room however the view was good. The room was clean and has been modernised but the bathroom was very small and poky and old and the A/C was old and loud and was on the floor like a wall heater. The room assigned was also an interconnecting room with the internal door locked. We could literally hear the people in the room next door sneeze and flush their toilet through the night which was quite annoying. On the second day I went to reception to enquire why our room had twin beds and was an interconnecting room and they advised that they had put us in the incorrect room type. We were then transferred to the beach tower in a king ocean room which did not have a smell, had a more modern A/C system and even a heated toilet seat. It was definitely more modern and updated then the room in the main tower however we lost the view of diamond head and only had a partial ocean view. All in all I would come back and stay again at the hotel but would make sure I would stay in the beachfront tower. We were on level 13.
The resort and amenities are fantastic and all the staff were very nice and helpful. We had the package that included the breakfast in the longboard club and we found this to be good value for money. It opens every morning at 6am so it worked out well as most of our tours started around 7am-730am giving us time to eat beforehand. We ate once at the resort at Morimoto which is an Asian restaurant and we enjoyed our dinner, even though it was very expensive but worth it for a nice dinner or celebration. There are some great places to eat close by to the resort that we thoroughly enjoyed that had a good atmosphere and they were Lulu's and Tiki Bar and grill. If you want to hire the beach chairs and umbrellas, then you need to walk down the main street to the left out the front of Tiki's to reserve the chairs with your daily credits. All in all we found the location great and that side of the beach a little less crowded.

MAKE SURE TO ASK REGARDING AMENITY FEE
Amenity Fee Disappointment (Paying to use the in-room coffee machine is a bit much....)
Feels very unethical, especially not explaining to guest regarding these fees or what these fees entails.
I recently stayed at Alohilani Resort, and while the experience had its positives, I feel it’s important to share a few concerns—particularly regarding the amenity fees.
First off, I want to acknowledge that the staff were friendly, the hotel was clean, and the aesthetic and location are undeniably beautiful. These aspects contributed positively to my stay.
However, what significantly impacted my experience was the unexpected $372 amenity fee that was taken from my account. At no point during check-in was this clearly communicated, and I was genuinely shocked when I realized the charge. To add to this, a $300 security deposit was also held—bringing the total withheld amount to $672. That’s a significant sum for anyone, especially when you're not utilizing most of the amenities.
I don’t drive. I wasn’t at the hotel much. I mainly slept there. Yet I was still charged as if I had used everything. There was no water refill after the first day, and even that bottled water is part of the amenity fee. It genuinely felt like I was paying for basic in-room items—like the kettle, the iron, and even the air I breathed. It left me wondering what exactly I paid for.
It’s disheartening to know that in today’s hospitality industry, guests are essentially paying just to sleep in a room, with nearly everything else coming at an extra charge. That’s not the kind of feeling you want to leave a hotel with, especially one that markets itself as a luxury resort.
Sadly, this left a bad taste in my mouth. While I once saw Alohilani as a go-to spot in Hawaii, this experience may very well be my last stay there. I truly hope the hotel revisits how these fees are presented and handled—transparency is key.
