Great location. Great pool. Bar and hotel staff are excellent. Rooms are a bit old but we were hardly in there. Plenty of hot water and a cold AC. Joel at the beach bar makes great margaritas and palomas . The only issue is the stairs. There are A LOT of them. We had room 15 so we were closer to the pool and beach. Going up for taxi or dinner was a steep hike. Plan ahead.

Catalina Beach Resort is a wonderful boutique hotel located on the best of the best beaches in Zihuantanejo - LaRopa Beach. There was ease of checkin and staff were more than pleasant and accommodating. The resort is rather dated but the location is terrific as you are within walking distance of the Centro and beach. There are pickleball and tennis courts 15 minute walk from the resort and there located near the Jungle Pizza restaurant (couple of blocks from restaurant). You can walk to the courts from the hotel via the beach or down the hill from the hotel pass the OXXO convenience store. There are lights for evening games on the courts for a small fee.
Plenty of gringos to team up with for either sport.
The hotel's restaurant is more accommodating for the breakfast plan, however, it can be a rather lengthy breakfast as the restaurant is busy during holiday season. Definitely worth paying for the breakfast plan as we enjoyed dining off the resort in the evening - plenty of restaurants in the area. Affordable meals for 2 (with drinks) will cost you $50-$60 per couple and there's live music at most restaurants.
Overall, this resort adequately met our needs as it was a great location and the beach amenities are excellent. Definitely, we are planning another trip there soon!

If there is a paradise, it is here at Catalina. The best thing about it it is that it is largely unchanged since the visits by of Mick Jagger, Liz Taylor, the Guggenheims. Here I get to be John Wayne for a week. On La Ropa, this is the purest with nature, screens yes and no glass so you hear the gentle lapping of waves through the night. Lush greenery, and every kind of bird imaginable. The staff complements the ambience, quiet and respectful, and ready to help. Kudos to breakfast crew Mario, Horatio, Luis and Laura, along with the cocktail crew on the deck and the beach crew with new grill serving ultra fresh very tasty food. We return almost every year.

We were very pleasantly surprised to arrive at such a beautiful resort with spectacular views of La Ropa Beach! The staff were all very friendly and helpful, the rooms were clean and spacious and we enjoyed our delicious breakfasts, dinners and beers and burgers on the beach (thanks to the wonderful waiters and chefs). There are many stairs, but they are in excellent condition and well-marked. Although the pool was clean and had a lovely view of the beach, we preferred the sand and surf under the palapas where we enjoyed some very cold Coronas! We look forward to being able to return and spend more time (one week was not quite enough). Recommend!

Be informed before you stay at Catalina Beach Resort Hotel. Likely a lovely hotel at one time, it now is substandard and run down. The bathroom tile has been grouted--and re-grouted--over the years, and is dark with age. Water from taking our shower leaked out onto the balcony (which we reported to the hotel). The shower curtain fell down while we were there. The lighting is poor; there are no comfortable armchairs (only 1 plastic one) in the room where you can read a book. Curtain loop hooks were missing. The mini-frig was noisy and frosty inside. These are partial comments. However, the beds actually were quite comfortable and clean. Built on a hillside, there are many, many, many steps to get anywhere. We have stayed at Catalina 3 times, but this was the worst condition.

A family and historical hotel ,charming !
Bernice the sales manager is on site and helpful. One day she drove us down to the beach just to be kind.
Wonderful staff, very attentive, and very professional and helpful .
Every single room faces the ocean, the hotel is actually carved into the mountain .
Breathtaking views !
They have their own private beach which the public cannot use unless they pay for a day pass. There is a restaurant/on the beach, as well as a swimming pool on the next level .
The panoramic bar has happy hour from six till eight and then becomes a dining room or you can eat during happy hour. It gets quite busy.
Be careful what drinks you order …. make sure that they are on happy hour specialty
We took the option that included breakfast, which is lovely. We have fresh fruit, coffee, fresh squeezed, orange juice any kind of egg you like or yoghurt and granola . They bring a freshly baked bread basket each morning. Breakfast on the ocean is really quite something . This morning we saw whales as we ate our breakfast. This truly is a gem.
From the beach to our room, it is 280 stairs and there is no elevator .
Not every room is that many stairs. We are in a suite on the highest level. There are many many rooms that are much lower.
At first we were overwhelmed, but now, three weeks in , my legs are tight & my heart is strong and I love the stairs ! You don’t forget anything in your room on your morning outing !!
Some of the rooms have been upgraded and you do not get a choice. We have stayed in upgraded and regular and both were lovely. It is a charming place to stay.
Don’t expect The Four Seasons . This is old, but very charming. We absolutely loved our stay here.
Each night there is a dinner special, and we found the coconut shrimp to be scrumptious. We even shared ours there were so many !! The food is fresh and very tasty. They work hard .The kitchen staff are so friendly and make fantastic meals.
Alfreth is buzzing around helping guests. He’s friendly and most helpful and completely bilingual.
Eddy , Adeline & Gustavo our waiters are fantastic. Every morning remembering us and helping with our Spanish.
The bartenders at the beach are attentive and precise . If you order your lunch on the beach, he has to run up all those stairs to get it.!!
Guillermo and David were the bartenders . They are very professional and efficient.
So finally. We both say it was a wonderful vacation. Mostly adults. Quiet and relaxing

We have been coming to the Catalina for 25 years. We have found some changes most unsettling that future guests should consider before booking.
The Catalina allows dogs in rooms with no apparent dog policy or enforcement of any restrictions on dogs, where they can go to use the bathroom (in our case it was directly in front of our room on the patio), whether dogs can remain in the room while guests go out and bark and disturb other guests, whether dogs are allowed in restaurants pool area, bar on beach, beach itself in the mornings. I woke up one morning last year with flea bites all over my arms and face.
I suggest a restricted dog walk for dogs to use the bathroom that are not in areas where humans sit, do yoga, etc and not in front of rooms to respect other guests privacy.
The Catalina needs a noise policy and rules. Guests who want to play music and party all night in the room next to you should not be allowed. That’s what the bar is for. A 9 pm quiet time should be observed. Music should not be allowed to be played on the beach by guests at any time. The restaurant and beach bar now have speakers and play music all day. This is disturbing for some guests who want to hear the waves and who come for relaxation and quiet.
The Catalina should not allow 4 -5 adults to stay in one room
The Catalina should have a no smoking policy in rooms, on patios and terraces, and in palapas on the beach. (We are too close together to allow smoking).
You have read all the othe reviews and comments about lots and lots of stairs, room quality (rustic) views (wonderful) beach (wonderful if no music or smokers)
Food service in restaurant is spotty, chef is new and trying. Beach service excellent.
The problem currently is that you never know if you are going to get loud noisy people in the room next door to you (walls are thin) who want to party all night of dog owners who have no respect for your privacy or enjoyment and think the area in front of your room where you do yoga should be their public dog walk and bathroom. Or if when you go to the beach you will have to leave because day pass guests are smoking and playing loud rap music. Or if the people leave their dogs in the room alone and they bark all day.
So it’s a hit or miss whether you are going to have a peaceful enjoyable vacation.
We have not these last two years
And management really seems to not be too concerned with these issues.
So regretfully we will not be returning
The problem currently, and the reason I gave only 2 stars, is that you

We have stayed at the Catalina for years and have always loved it. It was different this year. First we were very saddened to hear that Javier, after 17 years is no longer a member of the Catalina team. To us Javier was Catalina's Ambassador. I'm sure most of the regulars will be disappointed and surprised by this news.
We did enjoy several other employees, Alfredo, Alberto and Memo. Memo works so hard at the beach club...waiting on guest, and running up and down the stairs all day long to retrive the food...there has got to be a better way. I will say that when Memo is off there isn't any beach service unless you want to walk up to the bar and order. More troubling were the employees who stand around all day and stare at their phones.
We do love the palapas on the beach and the beachside suites. Restaurant has beautiful views but the food is just OK. We enjoyed cocktails at the Sunset Bar and conversations with Salvador the barman.
The Catalina is under new management, really didn't see any obvious improvements.
Umbrellas by the pool are ripped and some of the areas like in front of the beachside suites need to be cleaned up. Becuase of all that I said we aren't sure we will be staying at the Catalina again...it may be time to move on.

Breakfast good enough, staff was very nice and accommodating.
Beach bar staff could do better with service on beach. There was none.
TONS of stairs that are in disrepair, drinking water=small pitcher in the room that we refilled in the dining room which was up 3 flights of stairs.
Great location, no AC in our room, was not a big deal because we had a fan. Did have to move the bed to stay cool all night though.
Overall this place is just OK. We won’t stay again because for the money, we can do better.

We will be back with friends and family
Beautiful setting. Very friendly and professional staff. Our sea view suite was very clean and confortable. Great balcony to hang put on. The downside: coldish shower and a lot of steps to go around. All in all, we will be back! All the best to the team. C & G
