This is our favourite resort anywhere. I guess that's why this is our 18th time staying here! There is something special about this place. You arrive all stressed out, but about 15 minutes after you check in, you are deep in chillax mode. It's got a spectacular location, far from anywhere, on a cliff with a staircase down to a private beach. It has little tucked-away spots all over the place for just relaxing and enjoying the views. If you're looking for a place with casinos or all night partying, this isn't it (thankfully!) Rosa at check-in was terrific. Our flight was late getting in, which meant that everything downstream was disrupted. Rosa ended up being on duty alone, but cheerfully helped a busload of us check in. It was surprisingly quick, considering, and very soon we were on our balcony, listening to the waves. A cool thing that you get at check-in: your wristband is also your room key. Just tap your wristband on the detector pad on your door and you're in. No little card to get lost or forget. Almost impossible to lock yourself out of your room. Nice! Three folks have always been there since we started visiting in 2000: Jose in the dining room, Maria Letitia in the dining room, and Nicolas, well, everywhere! The three of them made our visit just a little bit more enjoyable with their personal attention. If you're looking for a superhero, just watch Yrineo making omelettes at breakfast. Wow! There's always a lineup, but never for long. He is that good and that fast! And the results are delicious. He has worked in several resorts in DR, and Grand Samana is fortunate to have him. Amazing! A couple of comments about the most recent changes to the resort. If you were here circa 2016, you probably were swamped with attention. It was interesting to experience. It was kind of like 6-star service. But it was also a little bit over-the-top. They've reduced some of the more extraordinary things (pillow menu, scent menu, butler service, etc.) and kept the core things that you really need. It was a little less "hovering" I guess and more of a "let's just let you enjoy your vacation" approach. We like it better this way, for sure. Couple of quick notes on restaurants here. They've simplified the approach. Rodizio restaurant is now Olas, which was wonderful. The service was great and food was excellent. Don Pablo has stayed pretty much the same, but we actually enjoyed it more this time than last. A little lighter mood, we felt. We also wanted to highlight the arrangements for food when you kind of miss the regular hours of restaurant operation (too much relaxing and couldn't find your watch). The buffet restaurant has an "al a carte" arrangement whenever the buffet itself is closed (with one small exception for an hour just before the evening meal). All you have to do is ask. The signage at the resort hasn't quite been updated to let you know this, so just ask around and they'll help for sure. We will definitely be back!

This small (I’d say boutique) resort is built on a cliff that has a small stretch of private beach. The views are stunning (bring binoculars for whale watching). It is small which may not be for everyone but we really enjoyed it. It allows you to get to know the staff - who were all very lovely, and the guests as well. I’d say the average age of traveler was 55+ (couples), with a few exceptions, and a few solo male travelers. Despite most reviews, the food was really good! The buffet is small but the selection was good, I ate healthy (always lots of fresh fruit, cooked vegetables, choice of meats & fish, cheese, salads, pasta, pizza & themed nights like Asian). Desserts were ok. Everything is small scale here, small beach, small pool, small buffet, small pool bar, small lobby bar, but there was always lots of room to sit, and everything was quality (except maybe the drinks- beer is Presidente (“ok”), wine is average, champagne is sweet, cocktails are very sweet). My only suggestions are to lively up the lobby-bar entertainment (the same girl sang every other night, great singer, but a little boring), would be nice to have entertainment that got people up dancing more often, and didn’t abruptly leave when that did finally happen. The hotel also needs to get rid of the rotting/rusting gazebo out in the ocean, it’s a terrible eye-sore. Other than that, it was a perfect little resort to relax, mingle, meet people, enjoy the sun & food/drinks. For anyone saying it is not all-inclusive, it is if you book it all-inclusive! Perhaps they were complaining because they only drink top shelf liquors (& yes at a la carte restaurants there are a couple of dishes that cost extra, just like any resort that you want to purchase an expensive steak or lobster, that is not unique to here). We rented a quad & drove to the northern beaches which were stunning. We also did a half day whale watching tour & yes, you’re pretty much guaranteed to see whales (when in season). Enjoy your stay. We will be back!

Buffet with very limited food options, it felt like they recycle too from previous meals. Only good food was generally the pizza and the pasta. Breakfast was the only good meal out of the three. - Restaurants: Horrible food. I do not recommend Don Pablo. It was inedible. It felt like food that is microwaved, literally had stomachache the next day. You only get 2 reservations but that’s probably good, you are not missing out. Las Olas is okay, probably the only acceptable food in our stay. - Washroom: Horrible design. Everytime, you use the toilet, you’ll hit your back on the toilet paper shelf since it is so close to where you sit. - Stairs: I don’t mind the stairs personally but keep in mind there are A LOT of stairs here to get anywhere - Beach: small and nice but it can get seaweed sometimes. Too much noise coming from the street behind the beach - Snacks: there are no snacks between meals. Your only options to eat at Breakfast/lunch or dinner. I suggest adding a snack bar - Drinks: they are okay but I would prefer if they use real ingredients rather than juices and syrups. - Entertainment: there is almost no entertainment here. No music at the pool or beach. It’s a relaxing resort with no entertainment other than music in the lobby at ~7:30pm

We had a great time at this resort. From NewYork we could only land at Santo Domingo which is about three hours ride, can be long. We arranged a private transfer with the hotel and it went smoothly. The resort itself is very charming, small and relaxing. It is rather old, but correctly maintained. Rooms and common areas could use some renovation, but overall it is decent for the price. Don't expect everything to be super clean and perfect, it is an older building, set your expectations accordingly. Food wise, offer was varied and we found something to eat every meal. You are in an all-inclusive eating buffet food, this is what you get. No fine dining but very correct for a resort. Some reviews are complaining about food options not being included in the a la carte restaurants, most dishes are included so you can easily find something to eat unless you are overly picky... Then maybe you should not go to an all-inclusive resort. The site is rather quiet, no big party or super loud music, which we liked. It is easy to get around as the site is small, can feel redundant at times but we stayed 4 nights and it was perfect. There is about 2h of entertainment each night at the lobby bar, it is good. No big show, very intimate venue and we liked that. Does not have the "luxury" details of a usual 5* hotel (no slippers or bathrobes provided, limited bar service on the beach or pool etc.) but feels like a good 3-4*. The downside for us has been the beach, we liked that it is a small private beach but clearly not enough chairs and palapas for all guests. It is close to the road so you can hear trucks driving by, and the beach is not super clean. We were not allowed to swim before noon on our last day as they were replacing the safety cord in the sea, staff was working very slowly to get this completed. Everyone's safety is important, but this could have been done earlier so we could have enjoyed the sea in the morning. All factored in, we had a great time and would recommend this resort to our friends.

A very relaxing stay. No real entertainment other than in the foyer every evening for a couple hours but we were totally good with that. It is a small resort with 149 rooms. It is adult only and very quiet. You definitely need to read the hotel outline to fully understand that it is not a party place. If you are looking for a relaxed stay by the pool or beach side, this is a place that will accommodate. I highly recommend the all inclusive deal unless you eat like a bird. Although the buffet was just okay, it was repetitive and recycled foods.. which is understandable in a 3rd world country. I loved how beautiful the resort is, the pool was wonderful and the staff were fantastic too. The only thing I was not overly impressed with was there were times when you could not get something to eat. The breakfast was available until 10 am and lunch started at noon till 4pm. Dinner started I believe at 6 or 7pm until 10pm. Nothing after that - no little snack bar. Room service was available from 11pm till 7am if you were on the All Inclusive plan only. Otherwise you pay. I think the resort could benefit from a little snack bar... just munchies or something. I brought my own. This resort is 15 minutes (cab ride) to Samana and if you are wanting to buy any kinds of snacks - you will pay dearly there. There is no real places to walk to from the resort itself and not recommended. I must say the rooms were very clean and the view was stunning. We had a balcony but not the suite and it was fantastic! If you go and love coffee but not strong coffee, bring your own and I thought a can of Carnation Milk in my checked in bag. So glad I did as the room has a coffee maker... that was our morning routine. Something else to consider, the beach is not a big beach... you can walk it in 3 minutes. There is many stairs to the beach so it is not good for anyone with mobility issues. There is not a beach bar and you have to come back to the pool bar to get drinks... just a heads up. US dollars and pesos are the best way to leave tips. 200 pesos are approximately $4.50 Canadian right now. Hope this review helps!

The hotel itself is absolutely beautiful and exuded luxury. But that was the extent of it. My husband and I booked a two week stay at this resort for our 40th wedding but by the 3rd day we were contacting our Air Transat rep to move to another resort. Our room was pretty with an ocean view but no balcony. Since we had booked with Bahia several times before we were expecting more than we received. The resort seemed empty and maybe that should have been a red flag but we decided to give it a few days. Nope. The food was horrible. The selection never changed day to day. The dinner buffet was closed 2 of the 4 days we were there. We relied on a la carte. Same with the pool buffet. No variety. Staff barely spoke english. Fortunately we were able to get a suite at El Portillo. But it did cost us extra plus the transportation to El Portillo.

This is a very nice resort. Small, only about 150 rooms, very close to the ocean so you can have the surf lull you to sleep if you choose. It was an hour drive from the Samana airport. Our room was in the smaller separate building. Our room was well appointed and clean with a balcony looking out over the ocean. The elevator was out of order for the first few days but the staff brought our bags up for us and it really wasn't an issue. The grounds are lovely and nicely landscaped. The property has several stair cases and would not be suitable for people in wheelchairs or with severe mobility issues, although there were folks with walking sticks and canes who seemed to manage. The pool area was very nice with lots of lounges so it was never necessary to "reserve" or "hold" a chaise lounger. There was music playing at the pool and was not too invasive most of the time. I expect if I had asked it would have been turned down to a lower volume. There was no animation or games around the pool side and it made for a relaxing atmosphere. There really is little to do at the hotel, but relax in one of the seating areas or around the pool, or on the beach. I might have enjoyed a game of bingo or something in the afternoon to break up the day, but it would need to be somewhere away from the pool area as to not disturb the other guests. There were musicians playing at the lobby bar most evenings from 8-10pm and some of the guests enjoyed some spontaneous dancing to the music. There was a small gym on the premises with some good universal weight machines, treadmills, boxing stuff, and yoga mats. I would have liked a thicker gym mat to do exercises on but there was enough stuff there to get in a workout. We were warned not to walk out of the property on the road, and we were disappointed as we like to explore. There was good reason for the warning as the road has no sidewalks or even shoulders and the traffic is busy enough to make it dangerous to walk. We saw no one walking on the road, not even the local people. For $20US each way you could order a cab to the nearest town, which was the port for cruise ships and geared to tourists. The road can be noisy, as it is a main road with all types of traffic during the day, including large trucks, but we had an ocean view room and it was not an issue for us. The wine included at the buffet was quite bitter/sour to me and I wouldn't recommend it. The wine in the a la cart restaurants was very nice. There was one bar open all day, either near the pool area or in the lobby. These were never too busy. The biggest concern we had was with the temperature of the food on the steam tables in the buffet. For the first 5 days most of the food was not in the safety zone where bacteria cannot grow." Hot foods should be held at 140°F or warmer. On the buffet table, keep hot foods hot with chafing dishes, slow cookers and warming trays. Cold foods should be held at 40°F or colder." We noticed that most of the guests were keeping away from the cooked meat dishes on the buffet and this could have been the reason. The was a grill at all times and so you could get freshly cooked omelettes at breakfast and cooked to order fish and meats at dinner. Except for the concerns above, there was a good assortment of nice food at every meal, and we never had any stomach issues. We enjoyed our stay, as I said it is a very nice, quiet hotel. The staff were attentive and nice to deal with. There were no drunk or obnoxious guests, there were people who were seniors and younger people as well. It was quiet at night, and a nice to place to chill out.

We decided to celebrate New Year's Eve 2025 in the Dominican Republic, at a place where we could enjoy both natural scenery and a good hotel. Choosing BAHIA PRINCIPE GRAND SAMANA was the best decision we could have made. From the moment we arrived until the very last second we were there, each and every one of their staff made us feel special and that they truly cared about us. During our first dinner, Basilio from the hospitality team told us that their goal was to make each moment special, and he was not lying. Everyone, including him, Marielba, Margarita, Jose Antonio, Yrineo, Maria Leticia, Maxuel, Pedro, Luis Joely, Alejandro, Mayelin, Nely, Víctor, and the others whose names I couldn’t collect, made our stay a wonderful experience. We are very grateful for the amazing time we had; thank you.

Sharing this review, fairly lengthy but hope you find it helpful as I struggled to find good info before our travels. Travelled to Bahia principe grand samana adults only all inclusive December 26, 2024 to January 2, 2025. Overall small resort (as advertised) and I don’t think was full the whole time we were there. Very quiet, not busy at all. No on site activities at the pool or beach, so it is a relaxing place. If you are looking for a party or lots of activities, this is not your place. There were several facilities at the resort that were not open. The sunset grill, and some bar and grill looking things at the main entrance that were not open, I assume because the resort was not full. But overall good resort if you are looking for a relaxing week. Lots of stairs, I would not recommend for anyone with mobility issues. Firstly- we booked all inclusive, and did not encounter anyone else in our week who was not all inclusive. Contrary to some of the reviews here, IT IS all inclusive, and although there were up charges available for certain drinks and food if you choose to indulge, we never encountered an issue with any on the all inclusive inclusions, and never had to pay extra for any food or drinks. ROOMS- we arrived very late at midnight. Small shuttle from the airport that took about an hour and fifteen minutes to get to the resort. Check in was fine, it was late and the buffet was closed, they had put a plate of meat and cheese in our room for our arrival. Room was clean, only downfall was the bathroom. Small and very dated. So much silicone around the tub, which was chipping and looked old, but clean. Bed was very firm, lots of pillows. Room was clean and daily cleaning service was good. Refilled the fridge with beer, pop and bottled water every day. You can hear the road noise in the rooms, but quiet at night, air conditioning worked well. Ocean view was amazing from the room, we were on the second floor. POOL- pool was good, lots of chairs, had to move around for sun/shade depending on time of day and what you are looking for. BEACH-beach was great, but small, Also lots of chairs, hard to find shade in the morning though. Waves were big, and crashed into shore, depending on the day, but nice to swim after you got past the break. A lot of road noise at the beach, as the road is above the beach. Being so small, there is no food, drinks or bathrooms at the beach. FOOD & RESTAURANTS - buffet breakfast was the standard all inclusive fare, omelettes, eggs, bacon, sausage fruit, toast, pastry, grilled veg etc. always good and the egg and omelette chefs were great! Buffet lunch only served at the one small pool/beach restaurant. Quite small but we never had a problem whether we wanted to sit indoors or outdoors. Food was good, chicken, fish, hotdogs and hamburgers and vegetables. They served drinks from the pool and wine and beer bar with lunch if you wanted. Dinner at the buffet was quite good, and we enjoyed it. Fresh grill with meat and fish, fresh made pasta bar and the many other selections at dinner. The food was quite good. A LA CARTES- we ate at the a la Carte twice, which were included in our week. No selection of restaurants, or the nights you could book, as they were only open Saturday and Sunday when we were there, but one night was international and one night was Italian. The food on both nights was fabulous! From lamb kofta, pork tenderloin, lamb medallions, salmon and finished with eclairs and cheesecake, was all wonderful! After reading some of the prior reviews about the food I was a bit worried, but we found all the food good, and always something we could pick to enjoy. BARS AND DRINKS- drinks were typical all inclusive. Good, but sweet. Pina colada, daiquiris etc. They would however make whatever you wanted if you asked them to. My only “complaint” would be the house wine. It was not good, I had a glass with food, but that was it. Pool bar opened at 10 am and lobby bar opened at 4 pm. Again, being a small resort, only one bar was open at a time, but there was always an option. SPA- we indulged in a couples massage which was great. We talked to a few other couples who also had positive reviews of the spa. Overall, this is a quiet adults only resort. We spent a lot of time in the loungers reading, overlooking the ocean. It was Great, if that is what you are looking for. The resort is a bit tired, with some Reno’s required, but we were pleased with our week, and the service was good.

Remember visitors can not drink their water. There is an elevator to the beach. The photo of the resort from the air is very appealing. Make sure the price is all inclusive.

Certainly not a reflection of Bahia Principe. Awful house wine; À la carte restaurants closed 4 of 7 days; all inclusive still requires paying extra for some menu items; pool music not adapted to the crowd present; offers ‘day passes’ so place is invaded on weekends by loud party goers....

Unfortunate for a 149 room resort catering mainly to n older crowd. Breakfasts are great (other than synthetic OJ) but other meals are very ordinary, comparable to 4 or 5 star resorts in Cuba for much less. Hours of service are different than posted and advertised. Variety is very good with fruits readily available. Personnel is excellent as are facilities, cleanliness and overall accommodations. As described, beach is small with very little shade available. Furniture in our room in need of repairs. Look for better alternatives.

We stayed at this resort approximately 7 years ago and loved it. However our experience this time was not the same. I read the reviews before we booked and I thought well that was not my experience previously and everyone is different so my husband and I booked here again for 11 days. The shinny 5 star it was has become a 3.5 or 4 at best. There are 3 bars, 1 on the beach... which is closed, one at the pool and one in the lobby. However only one is open at a time. During the day if it's not raining only the pool bar is open until 4 pm when the lobby bar opens. There is a menu and anything with a Asterisk * beside it is included in your 5 star all inclusive. However 80% of the drink menu does not have one beside it which means you have to pay for it. My husband was not impressed as this was not how it was 7 years ago. He ended up buying premium drinks that cost us an extra $300 because he didn't like the bottom shelf drinks they served. However the bartenders were fabulous and friendly. There were 2 A la cart restaurants, witch they gave you once you checked in. They gave us 1 reservation and when I asked for another they told me to come back Next Saturday or Sunday. We had booked in on a Sunday night, I told them we were here for 11 nights but still had to wait until the following Saturday. We did get 2 more A la carts. I have to say the A la Carts were amazing and the service was great. The only thing I would complain about would be the lack of air in the restaurants, you leave there soaked from sweating. I know it's a 1st world complaint, however overall the A la Carts would get a 5 star. The buffet however would not. There was the same food day in and out, some days you had bacon at Breakfast some days you did not. I ate a lot of rice and beans. I would not say the buffet would be a 5 star. I have had better buffets at a 3.5 star hotel. It was disappointing and a few days in my husband wanted to change hotels, that is how disappointing it was. The room - The room had a beautiful room but you can tell it was not kept up to the standards it was 7 years ago. It needed some TLC, The caulking around the shower was literally non existent and when you showered most of the water went on the floor. One night my husband came out of the bathroom and noticed that there was water dripping from the ceiling near the light fixture in the shower , which in my opinion is very dangerous. I took a picture and video of this and went to the front desk, they did not offer us another room and sent someone to our room, said that it was coming from upstairs and went to investigate. Never heard back from them, however the person at the front desk offered us a romantic dinner which we took for free to compensate for our trouble and not moving. It was a lovely dinner, the waiter and cook were great. However, when we went to check out of the hotel they charged us for the dinner. I was astonished, my husband was furious. The girl and the front desk pretended to not know of the guy who offered this to us and my husband said you were standing beside him this morning. She went into the back and spoke to someone then returned and said my manager knows nothing of this. Unbelievable. However not all staff were like this, there are a lot of great staff at this resort. It is the fault of owner and management. I know we will not be going back to this resort unfortunately.

We live Full Time in the DR and full disclosure, I own boutique agency working with customers looking to vacation in DR. I often times am invited by hotels with so I can experience first hand but we also travel for fun and I do not always want to have to be "working" while traveling . We ended staying her for one night on our to another resort only accesible by boat. What I loved about this hotel was the service. The staff were on PAR and you can tell from the guests interactions the reason why people return I think the property is unique in they offer AI and HB. We opted for HB meaning we had dinner and breakfast and drinks were not all inclusive. For us, it worked perfectly as I am discriminate drinker and I would 100% not drink the alocohol hidden under the bar that was part of AI plan. I was mistakenly served a Vodka Soda that brought make memories of Everclear in Freshman dorm, Due to low occupancy, the hotel had one option for dinner which our night was the "Gourmet" Again at this price point, the travel professional in me was curious in what their intepretation of Gourmet was. I was not shocked by food quality.. it was as expected. Not great. My husband Tuna Tartar was either cooked or old ( so not edible) , my camembert crunchy was basically deep fried skin of Camembert and no cheese. The $18 Upcharge for Salmon was a shocker. We live in Santo Domingo. and pay $18 for Salmom in the finest restaurants but I will say the cooked it very WELL DONE which is dream for any Dominican My steak was better than expected Breakfast was fine- usual. Although the bacon very bad quality ( See my review on Bacon at their 5 star property - the Cayo Levantado Resort) This is classic mid range hotel- at $ 250 a night AI in low season, the rooms are clean, large. great service, fun enviroment, but it is not 5 star or even 4 Plus based on food and alcohol choices

We had a nice holiday. Very quiet which we like. The food was good, not amazing but you certainly won’t starve. Very nice stay beds comfy and clean. Room was large. Ground were clean. The dinning room was warm at night but there is a breeze most nights.

Our third floor room was very comfortable with an excellent ocean view. The furniture was dated. The room and the balcony was kept exceptionally clean by the cleaning staff. Thank you. There are many steps in the resort, but some could be avoided by using the elevators in the main...

There are many steps in the resort, but some could be avoided by using the elevators in the main and our accommodation building. The gardens were very well maintained and the resort was kept immaculately clean, including the many public toilets,although many were short of paper towels. The beach and pool were great, the pool clean all of the time. Shade at the pool was difficult to find. At every other resort we stayed at (and there are many) the lobby bar is open in the morning for coffee and drinks including alcohol. Not here. It didn't open until 4-00pm, meaning you had to go downstairs to the dining room for coffee, if you could get it, or pool bar. It had a coffee machine but was never used. Very strange!! The food for the most part was acceptable. The Don Pablo place was very good with excellent service. All of the meals were buffet style, with breakfast being the best. The problem with all buffet meals is that they can be good at the beginning of the meal period but deteriorate after 3+ hours. This was the case here, particularly supper, starting at 6-00pm and ending at 10-00pm. We like to eat late and by the time we get there, some of the food appeared inedible and unappetizing. It was very very pleasant to eat meals in the shaded open air overlooking the ocean. Something we have noticed about some resorts,The vast majority of staff and this is one of them, they often advertise so called "top shelf" drinks are included when they are not. Could this fall under false advertising !! ? The vast majority of staff were very helpful, courteous and work very hard. I can't remember the name of the young man at the front desk, but he was particularly helpful. Thank you all. From the foregoing we do not consider this resort 5 star
