The Mandarin Oriental Canouan is the best kept secret in the Caribbean for luxury travelers. The resort reopened only a few weeks ago after recovering from the devastating effects of Hurricane Beryl. The island is friendly and accommodating to tourists. The 1,200-acre Canouan Estate property is mostly a nature preserve with two private beaches in addition to the main beach at the resort. Shell Beach is still under repair. It is a vigorous 2.5-mi walk from the hotel, and offers a calmer Atlantic-side beach for swimming and water sports. L’Ance Guyac Beach, a short van ride to the Caribbean side of the island, features a quiet, protected cove for snorkeling as well as an open air French-inspired restaurant. The Mandarin staff will arrange excursions pretty much anywhere you wish to explore on the island. There is also an 18-hole golf course on the estate, but we did not play during this trip. We were delighted to be assigned a butler upon check-in. Our butler, Rayshorn, was incredibly helpful, and it’s clear that the Mandarin prioritizes customer service training for all of its associates. Our suite had a stunning ocean view with the ability to open the massive terrace doors to the enjoy the tropical breeze. We enjoyed a relaxing couples massage at the spa overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. While the property and amenities are 5-star, it’s really the people that make the place truly special. We will be back again and again.

This is far and away the most beautiful resort we have ever visited. The rooms are beyond spectacular and the views are sublime. It is very remote so you do have to get on well with your companion! Every one of the staff are there to make your stay perfect and nothing is too much trouble. All you have to do is message your Concierge and the job is done! Food at breakfast and lunch was excellent and we ate a couple of times at the Lagoon Cafe in the evening, which was also very good (if empty) This is a stunning location and perfect if you need to just “flop”. Stand out Staff wise were Gideon, who gave us a fantastic tour of the island and our two delightful Concierges….Iola and Kia. Highly recommend ,

Our congratulations to Resort Manager Alexandre Ribola for overseeing the incredible staff at this island paradise. On our first night we enjoyed a sumptuous dinner cooked by a private chef in our villa. Our butler Iola started pampering us right away and didn't stop all week long. She is absolutely made for this job - friendly, efficient, precise in everything she handles - she is a gem. When we could tear ourselves away from our incredible private poolside view, we ventured around the island. So pristine were the beaches we found - untouched and gorgeous. Shell beach is a charming spot for lunch and a nice walk. Even if you are not a golfer, you must venture to the course - the views are amazing. The spa is awesome!!! Supreme relaxations as you are massaged and pampered as the waves are crashing right outside - it is divine. My thanks to Warni for some of the best massages and facial that I have ever had. While we ate in the villa several nights we also ventured to L'ance Guyac where we had a leisurely and delicious lobster dinner. Also went to Soho House which is highly recommended. One night we ventured out to a local restaurant and it was quite fun! Hotel car is always available to take you anywhere you want to go. By weeks end I was more relaxed than I have been in years and sadly had to leave our lovely oasis. The Mandarin has done an outstanding job with this property. If you have an opportunity to visit - do so without hesitating.

We have to give this a mixed review due to the discrepancies in service levels. The food and service in the restaurants including shell beach are five star. Thank you to the food and beverage manager and the wonderful chefs. Jennifer and her team at breakfast are amazing. Asianne is wonderful for Asian food at dinner and tides is a beautiful setting. The lunch at shell beach is wonderful. Although a little far away l’ance guyac is also worth going to for lunch/sunset and try out shannigans at the yacht club for a different setting. Our only annoyance was the weekly schedule of dining options. People really want one high end restaurant open daily for dinner... some nights it was only the cafe or the pool area whereas we would prefer more nights of tides/shell beach/Asianne. As for the bedrooms they are huge and well designed. The golf course is good fun… back 9 has amazing views … just needs some TLC. It would be good to get some canouan branded golf clothing in the shop as it was sparse. We didn’t quite realise the seamoss problem at both MO main beach and shell beach…particularly didn't like the daily tractor picking up the seaweed while trying to relax and the seaweed stopped you from wanting to swim at both beaches. Also note you are quite exposed at the main MO beach where the swell is strong along with significant wave height. I wouldn’t allow kids to swim in the sea. Snorkelling and swimming was harder than we had expected. The treatments in the spa are great. Just a pity there is no main spa reception/relaxation area… when you arrive you are taken straight into the treatment room. Our problems: -beach service (no real service of drinks on godahl /main MO beach… you have to search for a person rather than the other way round); no use of flags on loungers to ask for service and no service of small fruit kebabs or little treats as you are offered during the day at other five star hotels -ac in bedrooms was a nightmare… the iPad didn’t relate to climate control and the room was either freezing or far too hot -housekeeping service was poor… coffee stained dressing robe placed back up in room instead of replacement /no extra touches as per other guests reviews/no amenities like shower gel /bubble bath beside the bath- all attached to the wall in the shower! -boutique shop could offer more local souvenirs/MO canouan branded T-shirts/bags/toiletry bag… gifts to take home -overwater spa rooms: please don’t bother. 50/50 chance of getting to use them due to the wave height and the actual villas move with the waves. Completely impractical. Stick to the hillside ones. Would we go back: probably as food and rooms/location are beautiful. Would I fly from London to go just to this hotel- No. It would need to be a multi destination trip within the grenadines or neighbouring Caribbean islands. The hotel has great potential but needs to increase its service offering to what is expected of 5star hotel.
