Overall this was a disappointing stay. We stayed 2 years ago and while they have done a superficial refresh since then it really needs to be completely redone. My first impression was walking into the hallway where doors are beaten up, there are chunks out of trim, wallpaper is ripped and coming apart and there is a constant musty smell. I entered my room and the door stuck, corners and baseboards were not clean, hair in shower and in many corners in room/bathroom, shower had mold, toilet seat kept slipping, fridge made noises all night long, sheets so thin you can see mattress through them. Also, I asked housekeeping to change my sheets one morning when they came in and imagine my surprise when I found my socks in the bottom of the sheets that same night (I had kicked off the night before). So, obviously not changed. They need some retraining and customer service on the housekeeping side. My room was "garden view" and my view was just of a golf course..no garden. In all fairness, had I come into a clean room with a slightly better view I would have felt differently about my stay. Now the good...The grounds are beautiful and I really enjoyed my time when I was outside my room. Service at the pool was good, you don't have to rush down for chairs, and the pool is large with an adults only end. I want to love this hotel b/c the location is good, I like the feel of it meaning it's low key but still nice, doesn't feel overly crowded etc. If I ever do return I will upgrade my room at the very least.

We enjoyed a lovely six nights at the fairmont orchid. We stayed on the gold level ( so worth it, a great value!) and we were spoiled with such wonderful customer service. Everyone is so kind. This hotel turned out to be a wonderful jumping off place for near and far exploring. Nearby there are AMPLE tide pools, beaches with turtles, whale views, crabs, birds, just so much nature to enjoy. Or get in your car and be to Volcanos national park in two hours. Plus black sand beaches, Hilo, mountains, waterfalls, lookouts, horses, cattle, there is just so much to appreciate. Be aware the food and beverages here are RESORT PRICING. But that is one of the reasons that the gold level is such a good value. We rarely needed more food than what they serve in the lounge. We also planned when we were going to splurge. . We always found a new pretty spot to watch the sun go down in the evening and always gorgeous relaxing live music. I am not sure how they decide what rooms are “ocean view” but I was surprised that ours qualified. The ocean view category was an upgrade we chose and paid for. But our room was the farthest back from the ocean as the other rooms ( literally at the end of the building AWAY from the shore) and although you could see the ocean from the balcony, it was a stretch to call it ocean view. I would say MAYBE partial ocean but mostly golf course. That being said the course was lovely too, just not the ocean. I will include a panoramic of our room view for reference.

Stayed at the Fairmont for 3 nights as a couple. Our welcome to the hotel was actually terrible. We pulled our car into a spot near the entrance to go check-in and rather than someone greeting us with a welcome and offering to assist with our bags, a person came up to us asking if we were valet or self parking and when we said self parking, he said we have to move the car- with one person checking in and the other paring. Bad way to welcome someone. At check-in, the desk person said that he saw that we were celebrating an anniversary (had asked on the registration along with my husband's name), and he asked what is my wife's name. Politely told him my husband's name was Benjamin. He looked flustered. When Ben returned from parking, he did not say happy anniversary to him. This was a general theme of the place. I am not particularly sensitive to homophobia and seldom see it at hotels these days (outside of Jamaica and the mid East), but it did seem to be pretty pervasive at this hotel. Nothing overt, just in general not treated the same as other guests by many (though not all) of the staff. The grounds are beautiful and well maintained. The rooms are a good size and nicely decorated (though showing lots of wear and could use a freshening-up). The bed was comfortable though a little too soft (worn). The rooms and hallways had a decidedly moldly smell that was often covered with aggressive use of air freshener. The food and beverages throughout the hotel are very expensive- breakfast $50 pp + tax and tip, sandwiches and burgers close to $30, drinks in the $20 -25 range, and overall not of great quality. The breakfast buffet for example was nearly identical to the club breakfast that we had a Hyatt Regency in Honolulu (free) with the addition of an egg station. The service throughout the hotel was hit or miss and definitely not at a 5 star level. Housekeeping was good. We placed a wake-up call for our last morning and it never happened. The gym was very good. The beach was nice though no life-guards. On our 1st day, I had to go in and pull a young woman to shore who was in distress. First, booking through Costco was great. Booking through Costo was a great idea, as we did receive a room upgrade, included breakfast and $25 a day food/drink credit and water sports rentals (which would also have been very expensive). While we enjoyed being on the Big Island and the pretty grounds, probably would not stay here again, and would not recommend this hotel to gay couples.

Kayla was so sweet. We used the spa all day going in and out as it was our last day on the island, so used all the spa amenities to freshen up prior to travel. What more can be said about any Fairmont property. We are members and try to frequent as many Fairmont properties as possible and this one is definitely upper echelon! The grounds are superb, the amenities were amazing and all the food and drink you need is located on the property with the restaurants being deemed as some of the islands best!They have a thorough calendar of activities for entertainment and education, and every night there was live music. The best part is that the Fairmont Orchid is ideally situated to give you immediate and hassle free access to some of the areas best beaches, snorkeling sites, cultural sites, and more. Not to be missed

Let me start out by saying we have been to this resort many times over the years. Its location on the Kona coast can’t be beat. The hotel is in serious need of being refreshed but hopefully not so much as to dramatically change its understated appeal. A couple observations...

The hotel is in serious need of being refreshed but hopefully not so much as to dramatically change its understated appeal. A couple observations from our most recent visit. The Luna lounge remains a great evening spot but is way understaffed. That needs to be fixed pronto. Whoever the hotels interior design person is, they failed big time selecting the new furniture in public areas. It looks like something to be found in the lobby or halls of a Holiday Inn not a great luxury Hawaiian resort. Same can be said for the furniture in the refreshed rooms. Looks out of place and who would put new furniture in rooms that has no drawers ?.

This was our second visit to the Fairmont. Our last stay was in 2018, and we had been thinking about returning ever since. This time, we upgraded to the north building, which offered a stunning view of the water (and the glorious evening sunsets), and we booked a rate that included breakfast each morning. Both were excellent decisions. The rooms appeared to have been updated since our last visit. I would describe the décor as laid-back luxury with an island influence. The accommodations were well-equipped with everything one might need. The beds were exceptionally comfortable, the bathrooms were spacious, and the furnishings included a small sofa with an ottoman, along with another comfortable chair. The one odd thing is that the hotel doesn’t have Netflix or anything similar on their entertainment system they have movies on demand instead. That seemed very 90s. One of the Fairmont’s greatest assets is its staff. Everyone we encountered was friendly and consistently went out of their way to be helpful. We dined at nearly all of the on-site restaurants. While none were truly exceptional, the food was good, and we enjoyed each experience. A couple of times, we rented beach beds, which made for the perfect beach day. One tip: when renting snorkels and masks at the beach (the first hour is complimentary), they offer masks with corrective lenses—an excellent option for those who wear glasses, as it makes it easier to see the beautiful fish. Lastly, I must mention the stunning gardens and grounds, which contribute to the hotel's wonderful atmosphere. We look forward to returning in the future.

We had a wonderful stay on the Gold floor at the Fairmont Orchid. The room was clean and comfortable and we saw whales from our lanai each day. The grounds were beautiful and there was a nice trail along the beach that was great for walking, seeing the whales or watching the beautiful sunsets. The food and snacks from the Gold Lounge were delicious and very convenient. The restaurants were also really good and the friendly staff all over the resort went out of their way to make us feel welcome. This was our second stay at this resort and we had the same great experience each time!

Wonderful hotel in a beautiful location. Very comfortable bed, spacious well appointed room. Clean and quiet. Very good breakfast buffet. Friendly and helpful staff. Good amenities snorkelling, pickle ball & golf and coastal trail walks.

Aloha! This is the place to get close to what we felt was real Hawaii. Clean and very tasteful; well maintained;flowers and Koi ponds set in a golf course with hiking and running trails along the beach; very low tourist pressure. The sunrise canoe with Hawaiian guide was fantastic! Not at all strenuous! Ahi, (our guide) was informative but refreshingly casual. Nice guy that loves what he does. He explained some Hawaiian traditions and the challenges of sustainability in today’s setting. We saw whales breaching, then they came to within 200 feet; you could easily hear their breathes. Beautiful crystal clear warm water with colorful reef fish. Tide pools just north of hotel were fun too. By far my favorite Hawaiian island and hotel.

For those accustomed to a 5 star experience at Fairmont properties, it's best to adjust expectations down one notch. I've reviewed this place harshly in the past, and am revising my attitude to be much more favorable. It is a decent 4 star experience. The hotel itself, especially the lobby and common areas, is tired and due for a significant upgrade. That said, there is enough of an experience to be had that it's worth a visit if you go with eyes open. Brown's Beach House, Binchotan, Luana Lounge, and Hale Kai restaurants are all quite good, with Hale Kai being the informal option. And Luana Lounge earning coolest light dining/boozing option this trip. The Orchid Court (same space as Binchotan) offers a good breakfast buffet. The grounds are quite pretty if not elaborate, and the ocean views are spectacular. There is a smaller, very protected bay with a beach that is ideal for young kids, though decidedly not for wave jumping or boogie boarding. Watching sunsets from the oceanside chairs is a must. We saw a ton of whales offshore as well. The workout room is big and functional, if a little cluttered. The spa proper is tiny, but the appeal is that treatment rooms are all outside in private huts or at the water. Not bad as long as it's not mowing day. The pool is fine, and includes an adult area. It is nothing compared to the turbo crazy pools at some resorts, but I didn't hear anyone complaining. The nearby "mall," part of the larger Mauna Lani resort area, is pretty depressing. Locals tell us the property management company is to blame. That said, Tommy Bahamas, Foodland, and the Island Hopper Tap Room are exceptions. There is a spectacular walk from the Orchid property along the shore down past the Mauna Lani property, through fish ponds, and down to the Mauna Lani South golf course. You'll need your smart phone or real camera. It makes for a great 4 mile morning down-and-back. We priced the travel independently via internet and also through Costco travel. Costco was BY FAR the best package, including airfare, rental car, hotel accommodation, and breakfast. We'd return as long as the price was right again. The nearby "mall

Recently stayed here with my wife for 5 nights for a birthday trip. It is about a 30/40 minute drive from the airport. The staff is excellent and welcoming from the moment that you arrive. The rooms are spacious, clean and luxurious. The grounds at this hotel are beautiful. From the private beach to the pool & grotto style hot tub, everything is well kept. They also have two golf courses to choose from. The breakfast buffet is one of the better ones that we've seen while traveling. With an omelette bar, two rows of hot foot, cold food, fruit and dessert bar... they have something for everyone. They have a lounge/bar area on the top floor with live music and a great view of the sunset. Binchotan is a great restaurant. The more "casual" of the two main restaurants but we found their food to be incredible. Brown's Beach House is the nicer of the two and also had excellent food and service. They also have a shuttle service that can drive you a few blocks to a grocery store and other amenities. I'd recommend this hotel to anyone staying on the Big Island!

The Fairmont is a stunning and relaxing resort. We actually booked a different hotel and cancelled upon check in - as it wasn’t what it was described to be. So we quickly booked a room at the Fairmont and headed over. Our check in took a little over 2 hours because they had trouble finding our last minute reservation, but they comped us some drinks and we got to relax in the beautiful weather outside. Service overall was really great. From breakfast to dinner to drinks by the pool. They give you water bottles upon check in (good quality) we’re really great and they have water stations scattered throughout. Housekeeping was very on top of it, a couple of the days they even cleaned it 2x! Overall, food was decent. Nothing was mind blowing or exceptional. I thought the prices of the drinks/food didn’t quite meet the overall value it should have been though. 2 people eating and drinking (not excessively at all) for 4 days was $2,000 which cost the same amount as the stay. Shoutout to Sherry from the front desk check in for being extremely sweet and Evelyn from the lounge for being so fun to talk to and recommending great drinks. We did the luau on the property as well and that was an AMAZING experience. Everyone did a fantastic job and the food there was actually the best we had the entire time. Moral of the story: the resort is beautiful, the pool area is a good size (a lot of yelling kids playing in the pool when we went though), the rooms were good sizes and nicely updated. Biggest cons: pricing for food and drinks were very high even though it wasn’t the best/didn’t feel it was worth it at a Fairmont. No music at the pool - when kids aren’t yelling it was too quiet, we needed to have something playing on our phones to relax to.

I stayed at the Fairmont Orchid for a romantic week long trip in November, and while I’d normally love to share my thoughts on the grounds, the room, the amenities, how I used the Chase Reserve Edit program to book, etc – but the end of my stay, when checking out, I was shocked to see that there were over ten fraudulent charges billed to my room, ranging from $500 dinners, to multiple breakfasts on the same days that I’d had complimentary breakfasts, to a child’s tee shirt at the onsite boutique (I wasn’t traveling with a child). My suspicion is that someone was using my name and room number during my stay to charge things to my room and the hotel didn’t have safeguards in place to prevent this from happening. Obviously, this is incredibly disconcerting, feels violating, and left a shadow at the end of my experience at the Fairmont Orchid. If I hadn’t been vigilant about reviewing my bill, I would have been charged for over $2,000 of fraudulent activity. The front desk was kind enough to remove the majority of these charges as I checked out, but the final billing that I was charged was still incorrect. I emailed customer service and the concierge requesting to talk to either the GM or head of Guest Services, but it seemed to fall on deaf ears, and I was only contacted by a member of the accounting department, who I had to spend days trading emails with to sort the final incorrect charges. I asked multiple times to speak to someone on the hotel’s management team to understand how something like this could happen (had another person gotten my stay details and just kept charging things to my room – creepy if so; or was this employee error or employee fraud; and how was the hotel looking to safeguard against this going forward?) - no one from the hotel team ever reached out to me, which was really disappointing, and made me feel like as soon as I left the hotel, they couldn’t have cared less about my experience or repeat business.

We travel a lot and we're impressed with Orchid physically and the attentiveness and warmth of the staff. EVERYONE was wonderful thoughtful and genuine aloha.

Waterfront has lovely protected beach with great snorkeling, swimming or just a nice float/soak! Big pool w/ lots of chairs in shade or sun! If you don't have an Accor account, GET ONE! It is free and you get lots of fun extra perks!

Fairmont Orchid exceeded our expectations. We enjoyed the a most relaxing stay! The staff everywhere from the bellman to housekeeping to the breakfast servers were uniformly warm and friendly and the hotel itself is a stunning piece of plantation style architecture, even over 3 decades in… We stayed on the beautifully renovated gold floor, and loved our updated room with its elevated bed linens. The concierges are excellent and the entire gold floor staff can’t do enough for you. The food offerings were quite good and very substantial. The pool area is a bit dated, but this wasn’t a problem for us as we aren’t really pool people. Other guests seemed to enjoy it. The resort is so beautifully situated on the ocean in Kamuela and there are plenty of coastal hikes, great snorkeling, and bountiful, well kept flora to enjoy.

This was our third visit to the Fairmont Orchid and we were thrilled to be back. First of all the property is absolutely beautiful. We stayed on the 4th floor of the north tower and had a stunning view of the ocean and amazing views of the sunset from our balcony. The rooms have been refreshed with new furniture and the beds are very comfortable. A shout out to housekeeping who were there twice a day. In this post Covid era it was a welcome change to the once every two days housekeeping that you find in lesser hotels. The service was exceptional. Every employee was courteous and friendly and did their jobs efficiently. The breakfast was included in our booking so we ate there every day. It’s pricey, $50 for adults $25 for children. It’s a beautiful buffet with everything you could want for breakfast. If it had not been included we probably wouldn’t have paid for it. I’m happy with a muffin that you can get at the small grocery down the road. We didn’t have dinner at. Browns this trip opting instead for a splurge dinner at Merrimans in Waimea. I waould recommend making the half an hour drive upcountry to eat there. Lunch can be sandwiches from Browns Deli or food from Hale Kai, their sand floored more casual restaurant. I can’t recommend this hotel highly enough. We will be back.

Lots of little places to sit around property. Live music in two places nightly - on beach by Browns and lobby. Food good - expensive but like most of Hawaii, just good not great. Pool is good - one hot tub only, no real adult pool - they've sequenced off a portion of pool for adults but doesn't really do the same. Each area small bit decent - great for young kids - super safe, some so so snorkeling as well. Ok beach path to walk to Mauna Lani Auberge. Resort fee covers 1 hr of 2 snorkel sets. Does not cover SUP like it used to (not great area for SUP as must remain on very small cove). Does not cover spa steam or sauna like it used to. Quiet and relaxing. Actually wished they had some music piped during day at pool. Still lots of young kids even in off months. They do get large conferences which almost always are annoying (think drunk people roaming hall at 10pm). If you can get a deal on room rates it's worth it . Not as nice as Auberge but better than Westin.

We requested and were assured we had a room that was in an area that had been refurbished. Not only was our area not refurbished but the rooms next to us were being painted and hammered. The elevator was out of commission the entire week we were there. We had to walk a long way just to get down to the beach level. I drink a lot of coffee and my Nespresso machine would not work properly. I asked about another one and heard nothing, and I was continually out of creamers and sugar. The options for meals were seriously lacking, luckily we had a car (which we were charged $40/day to park) so we could go elsewhere for good food. The staff at the pool and beach couldn’t have been nicer, it was a bright spot! We were very disappointed as it was an Anniversary trip and we had picked this hotel especially because we have had such great experiences with Fairmont. Not this time.

Fabulous. Fabulous. Fabulous. We stayed for 7 days at the Fairmont Orchid on the Fairmont Gold Floor, and we had a great vacation. The rooms have been remodeled and are just gorgeous with a stunning view of the gardens and ocean (partial ocean view). The linens and towels are of the highest quality, and the cleaning/room staff are outstanding. (make sure to tip them!!). The Gold Lounge access is worth the upcharge as they serve an amazing breakfast that is more than just "continental". In the evening, they have more snacks that could easily substitute for dinner! My only negative is the choice of wines for the "honor" bar in the evenings. Better quality reds are needed for such discerning guests. The arrival process is epic, with a glass of champagne, and then they deliver a bottle to your room. We had a problem with the caulking around the tub, and that was fixed immediately with a bar of chocolate and an apology left in the room. A nice touch. The property is just beautiful, even by Hawaii standards. The landscaping is well-maintained the pool is wonderful. I saw comments about not enough umbrellas, but we had no problem during our stay. The pool attendants went out of their way to find something for us. The beach was fun and very safe for snorkeling. You must pay $140 a day to have the shaded chairs, but the other chairs are free. We knew this ahead and spent $20 from Amazon on a portable shade tent and packed it in our luggage. Well recommended, and if you have little ones, buy a larger version. We used the pool bar and food service, and it's the usual high Hawaii prices, but good quality. The best choice for food was the Taco Truck located behind the north tower, near the beach. The beach bar is adjacent, so you can have a drink with your tacos. We ate at Binochan and were disappointed with the food quality.........not recommended. Overall, the resort is just fantastic and the staff are wonderful. We will be back!

The Fairmont Orchid is an absolutely beautiful property with its own small private beach. The room was fantastic, clean, and WELL maintained. They even went as far as to line up my girlfriend’s jewelry. Quite above and beyond if you ask me. Parking on the property isn’t free unfortunately. We didn’t eat/drink on the property as the prices are rough. That is par for the course in Hawaii though. There really aren’t many affordable options in the area unfortunately. Highly recommend the Fairmont Orchid except for the one visitor we had… (see picture) yuk.

Highlights for us were the lagoon pool, snorkling in a protected cove and dinner at Brown's Beach House. The location was great for us for exploring the Big Island. We really liked the reusable water bottle and filling stations. I've only seen this at one other hotel before and it was a pleasant surprise. We had a king sized room with an angled ocean view. The room was well appointed and very comfortable. Our view was out over the resort and was spectacular. We also really enjoyed the trail that you can walk south from the resort along the coast. I couldn't give 5 stars because there were a few things I would change: more shade poolside, you do need to get down to the pool early to score an umbrella; the beach is not that desirable to hang out and relax on; and a broken elevator in the north building meant that we had a very long walk back to our room from the pool.
