## Another Wonderful Anniversary at Secrets Akumal — With a Few Areas That Need Attention
My wife and I recently spent six days at Secrets Akumal for our anniversary. This was our second time staying here, so obviously they did something right the first time!
Overall, we loved our stay. Secrets Akumal remains one of our favorite resorts, and there is a lot that they do exceptionally well. There are, however, a few areas where we think some improvements could make an already great resort even better.
### The Staff — Outstanding
Let me start with what may be Secrets Akumal's greatest asset: **the staff**.
We absolutely love them.
They aren't simply helpful—they are genuinely friendly and seem to have a sincere concern for the people staying at the resort. And when I say everyone is friendly, I mean **everyone**: maintenance workers, restaurant hostesses, servers, cooks, bartenders, beach staff, housekeeping, etc.
As you walk around the property, people routinely greet you with "good morning," "good evening," or "good night." It sounds like a small thing, but it makes the resort feel incredibly welcoming.
The beach staff deserves special recognition because they consistently go above and beyond.
### The Restaurants — Our Ranking
This is where things become a little more hit-or-miss, so hopefully our unofficial restaurant rankings can help someone planning their trip.
**1. Market Café — The Gold Standard**
Market Café is easily the most dependable place to eat at the resort. Breakfast is excellent, and honestly, lunch is just as good.
If you can't find something you want to eat at Market Café, there might be something wrong with you. 😂
The number of choices is incredible, and more importantly, the food is consistently good. I only wish they served dinner.
**2. Bordeaux — Best Dinner**
Bordeaux, the French restaurant, was our favorite dinner restaurant.
The food is excellent.
My biggest advice: **get there between 6:00 and 7:00 PM.** Once you get much later than that, expect to wait.
**3. Seaside Grill — Great Lunch, Good Dinner**
Seaside Grill is available to Preferred Club guests and serves both lunch and dinner.
Lunch is excellent, with plenty of options.
Dinner can also be very good, but once again, try to get there around 6:00 PM. Of all the restaurants we visited, Seaside seemed to have the longest waits later in the evening.
One thing to watch: some dishes—particularly the steaks—can be extremely salty. If you're watching your sodium intake, I would specifically ask your server if the kitchen can use less salt.
**4. Portofino — Good Italian, But Easy on the Salt!**
Portofino is another very nice dinner option, and the same advice about getting there early applies.
My only real complaint is the salt.
Sometimes the food is so salty that I started wondering whether the chef was secretly trying to take a few guests out. 😂
Seriously though, if you're sensitive to salt, ask them to go light when ordering.
**5. Oceana — A Welcome Change of Pace**
Oceana is a great option when you've reached the point in your vacation where you can't look at another steak, burger, or plate of fries.
Very good seafood and a nice change of pace.
No complaints from us here.
**6. El Patio — Quiet and Underrated**
Ironically, the Mexican restaurant was probably the quietest restaurant we visited.
It's very low-key, getting a table never seemed to be a hassle, and the Mexican food was good.
Definitely worth visiting.
**7. Himitsu — Unfortunately Our Least Favorite**
We really wanted to like Himitsu.
In fact, we tried it multiple times because we wanted to make sure our first experience wasn't simply an off night.
Unfortunately, it was pretty consistent.
The best way I can explain it is that everything tasted **Asian-ish**.
The sushi was sushi-ish. The Pad Thai was Pad Thai-ish. The ramen was okay at best. Some sauces didn't seem to match the dishes they were served with, and everything just felt slightly off.
If Secrets is going to offer Asian cuisine at this level of resort, I think the kitchen either needs chefs who specialize in those cuisines or more extensive training from chefs who do.
There used to be a Mediterranean restaurant here that we visited during our previous stay, and unfortunately it is currently closed.
That's a shame because the Mediterranean restaurant was **by far the best food we had during our previous trip**. We didn't discover it until our final night last time, and afterward we were kicking ourselves because, had we known how good it was, we would have eaten there several times.
Hopefully it eventually returns.
### The Rooms — 99/100
Honestly, Secrets does hotel rooms better than almost anyone we've experienced.
We've stayed at Secrets Akumal twice and have also stayed at Secrets in Cancun twice, and whoever handles the room design deserves credit.
One of my absolute favorite features is the **private room-service compartment** built into the entrance of the room.
If you order room service while your Do Not Disturb sign is on, the staff can place the food inside this compartment from the hallway. You then open a separate door from inside your room to retrieve it.
It's simple, incredibly convenient, and something I now think every hotel should have.
So why 99 instead of 100?
**Bathroom lighting.**
The bathroom itself is well lit, but the combination of the light placement and the way the mirrors protrude creates strange shadows across your face. It makes shaving, makeup, and other grooming surprisingly difficult.
We've solved the problem by traveling with a small lighted mirror.
Problem solved—but something Secrets could easily improve.
### The Beach — Beautiful, But the Sargassum Was Brutal
The beach itself is absolutely beautiful.
Unfortunately, during this trip the sargassum was really bad.
And I want to emphasize: **this is not the resort's fault.**
The amount washing ashore was incredible, and the smell could become pretty rough.
To Secrets' credit, they were out there as early as 6:00 AM every morning trying to remove it. We're talking teams of workers, trucks, tractors and even heavy equipment.
One day we watched those poor workers going from approximately 6:00 AM until 3:00 PM, and they still couldn't completely keep up with it.
I do have one suggestion for the resort: invest in a proper **beach/sand rake machine**.
We use them here in New York. They're essentially large mechanical rakes pulled behind a vehicle that collect debris while allowing most of the sand to fall back onto the beach.
Watching employees try to tackle massive quantities of sargassum with small handheld rakes seemed incredibly inefficient, especially when conditions became severe.
The workers were doing everything they could. They simply need better equipment.
### Entertainment — Secrets, We Need to Talk
Okay, Secrets.
This is where we have a problem.
Let's start with the main theater.
The theater itself is a fantastic space, and some of the performers are very talented.
But the sound production desperately needs improvement.
During one show, there was a **phenomenal female lead singer**, and you could barely hear her microphone.
Guests were repeatedly motioning toward the sound booth. People were also trying to get the attention of someone controlling equipment from an iPad on the floor.
Nothing changed.
Eventually, even the singer herself stopped and motioned toward the booth asking them to turn her microphone up.
Still nothing changed.
It was incredibly frustrating.
I know this sounds harsh, but Secrets either needs more experienced sound engineers or additional training for whoever is operating the audio and lighting equipment.
You have talented performers and a beautiful theater. The production quality should match them.
### Silent Disco — So Much Fun... But Those Headphones
We LOVE the Silent Disco.
It's ridiculously fun.
But good lord, **please thoroughly disinfect those headphones.**
The mildew smell was BAD.
You could smell some of them before they even reached your ears.
Whatever cleaning process is currently being used isn't enough. They need a cleaning solution specifically designed to eliminate mildew and odor between uses, not simply a quick disinfectant spray.
It's such a fun event, and this one issue makes it unnecessarily unpleasant.
### Poolside Food & Music Events — Great Idea
We really enjoy the larger food-and-music events around the pools.
The atmosphere is great, the food is fun, and the productions add something different to the week.
Our only suggestion would be finding some way to bring the performances closer to the guests.
The stages extend over the swimming pools, which looks impressive, but because they can only extend so far, the performers sometimes end up surprisingly far away from where most guests are seated.
You can hear everything, but actually seeing the performance clearly can be difficult.
### Art/Street-Fair Events — Great Concept, More Variety Please
We also really enjoy the evenings with art displays and vendors that have more of a street-fair atmosphere.
It's another great concept.
The entertainment during those events could use more variety, though.
For example, having one rock violinist perform for nearly an hour becomes repetitive regardless of how talented the performer is.
It would be much more entertaining to rotate several acts throughout the event—a violinist, guitarist, singers, another instrumentalist, etc.
That would keep the atmosphere changing throughout the evening.
### Overall
Despite some of the criticism above, **we had another wonderful stay at Secrets Akumal and would absolutely return.**
The property is beautiful, the rooms are excellent, the beach is gorgeous, there are plenty of food choices, and most importantly, the staff is exceptional.
Some of our complaints are also relatively easy fixes: better sound engineering, more thorough headphone sanitation, additional entertainment variety, improved beach-cleaning equipment and perhaps a little less enthusiasm from whoever is holding the salt shaker in a few of the kitchens. 😂
We came here to celebrate our anniversary, and once again Secrets Akumal gave us a memorable vacation.
Hopefully this ridiculously detailed review helps someone planning theirs!

Smiling, polite & very friendly staff,
The resort is thoughtfully designed, all green, jungle, "nature" vibe.
Rooms are nice and spacious,
Housekeeping does cleaning + turn down services , every day.
Cleanliness : Very very clean resort
Food : Different great options , very good quality. The romantic diner on the beach was a a highlight of our trip, food was just out of this word, soo good !
Entertainment :
During the day :
From the bike tour around the resort to the different pool activities, tennis court & beach volleyball, there is always something great to do if you are an active person. Had a blast !
At night : Live music, artistic shows at the theater, karaoke nights & night club on site.
The spa : A bit pricey but worth it. The whole experience with hydrotherapy & massages leaves you relaxed & re-energized.
The best part throughout our stay ?
The staff of the resort, just unbelievable of friendly and kind they were.
A big shout-out to them, especially:

The food was amazing, the Saturday night show and the buffet were exceptional. The activity staff was alot of fun. We did archery with Melanie, she was so sweet and funny. I actually hit something! Excellent instructor. We did snorkeling with Oscar and Arie, that is a tough job caring for us amateurs. They were both patient with our entire group who did need some help finishing the entire activity. We also did water basketball with Melanie, again she was great, and water aerobics with Alan. Alan was also a lot of fun and very energetic. Fantastic activity staff. They made our visit so much fun. A big thank you too our concierge Jose, Metz and Maximillo (loved the Kobe tattoo) they were great as well in building 4. The pool staff Diego, Karla, Isaac and Jose were also amazing. Thanks to all, for making our stay wonderful.

We’ve stayed at several Secrets resorts, and Secrets Akumal is definitely one of our favourites.
We spent most of our time around the Relax Pool, which was exactly what we wanted from this holiday. It’s peaceful, beautifully maintained and has a genuinely relaxing atmosphere, while still being close enough to the restaurants, bars and other facilities that everything is easily accessible. For us, it was the perfect balance between having plenty going on around the resort and being able to escape somewhere quiet during the day.
The whole resort is beautifully landscaped and the service was consistently excellent. Staff were friendly, attentive and genuinely seemed to want to make sure we were enjoying ourselves. The food was also very good, with plenty of choice across the restaurants and bars.
We also upgraded to Preferred Club, which worked particularly well for us because of the more central location of our room and the additional breakfast options. We didn’t spend much time on the beach, so being well placed for the pools, restaurants and other facilities was more important to us.
The atmosphere throughout the resort was relaxed and sophisticated, and we never felt crowded despite the size of the property. It’s a great choice if you want an adults-only resort where you can be as active or as lazy as you like!
Overall, a fantastic week at Secrets Akumal. We’d happily return and would particularly recommend the Relax Pool if, like us, you’re looking for somewhere peaceful to spend most of your days.

Exceptional Stay with Magical Vibes – Highly Recommend! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (Our stay at this hotel was absolutely incredible and far exceeded our expectations.
The experience was so wonderful that my family didn't even want to leave the property to go touring!
The Highlights:The Atmosphere: The resort setup is unique, featuring multiple buildings surrounded by lush vegetation and pools. Instead of a standard lobby, open-air halls and pasillos connect the property, and this is where they host a magical, immersive Mexican market experience.
The Food: Every meal was exceptional, from the casual dining spots to the main restaurants.
The Staff: The entire team was amazing. Our concierge, in particular, was fantastic and made sure we had everything we needed.
Areas for Improvement:The only minor critique involves the swim-up pool features. The water in the swim-up area could use a bit more frequent cleaning. Additionally, the pool lights turn off around 9:00 PM. It would be a huge improvement if they stayed on later, as being able to swim at night is the main reason to pay extra for a swim-up room!
Overall, we had a beautiful vacation and we already cannot wait to go back.

My girlfriend and I just returned from Secrets Akumal and had an incredible experience. The rooms and grounds are absolutely stunning, the food and drinks were great, and the entire property feels every bit like the high-end resort we were hoping for. But as beautiful as the resort is, what really made our trip memorable were the people.
The level of service was remarkable throughout our stay. From the groundskeepers and wait staff to the pool concierges, spa staff, bartenders, and everyone else we encountered, people consistently went out of their way to make us feel special.
One small example really captures the culture of the resort. On several occasions we found ourselves trying to figure out how to get somewhere on the property. It did not seem to matter who we asked or what their role was. Instead of simply pointing us in the right direction, they would stop what they were doing and personally walk us where we needed to go. On a few occasions, they even walked us back afterward. That level of hospitality was something we noticed again and again throughout the week.
Our concierge, Monica, was an especially important part of our experience.
On our very first day, we realized we had lost a passport, which is obviously not how you want to begin a vacation in Mexico. Monica immediately stepped in to help. What impressed us most was not simply that she helped solve the problem, but the way she handled it. She stayed calm, caring, and reassuring throughout the entire situation. At no point did she make us feel embarrassed for losing it or make an already stressful situation feel worse.
She started making calls, including contacting the airport and another number that ultimately helped locate the passport. That same evening, Monica called us to let us know it had been found. She then helped us determine the best way to retrieve it, recommended renting a car, and coordinated the rental for us so we could go pick it up.
That alone would have made her memorable, but Monica continued to take care of us for the rest of our stay. Every day she greeted us with a warm smile, asked how things were going, and made sure we had what we needed. She made us feel genuinely cared for rather than simply being another couple staying at the resort.
That feeling extended well beyond Monica. There is clearly a service culture at Secrets Akumal that is difficult to capture in pictures or a list of amenities. The property itself is gorgeous, but it was the kindness, attentiveness, and genuine warmth of the staff that turned a beautiful resort into an exceptional vacation.
We left feeling like we had been truly taken care of, and that is probably the highest compliment we can give.
Thank you to Monica and the entire Secrets Akumal team for making our trip so memorable. We had a wonderful time and would absolutely recommend Secrets Akumal.

My review from our first stay: Preferred Club swim up King suite, building 4, staying 5 nights in early August 2026.
It was awesome! This trip was booked entirely with points and to celebrate our 20th. We'd never tried a swim up suite and our only exposure to them was when we stayed at Hyatt Zilara in Cancun (we didn't stay in that room type, we just saw them and got us thinking ahead). So this review is somewhat a comparison to that Zilara resort (also an AI, Adult Only resort).
As you all know, this resort is like a jungle! It's so well managed and perfectly groomed. The grounds are stunning. There's loads of privacy and thoughtful nooks and crannies all over for increasing feelings of intimacy. But what this also does is, well, take away the feeling you're at the beach. You really don't see the beach unless you purposefully go to the beach. And at that, there isn't much beach. What beach there is is filled with beach chairs or bali beds. The sand is lovely, white, soft. Zilara, on the other hand, has unobstructed views of the ocean and beach from nearly every inch of the resort.
But the beach is also the sad part, here - but I want to stress this didn't really impact our trip and I was very educated about the sargassum situation months in advance. We knew what we were going to find there. Each day there were different amounts washing ashore. I didn't go to see the beach daily, so maybe there was a day where there wasn't any accumulation? But the days I did walk to the shore, there were a few feet of it. They were raking it up and even using trucks, dump trucks to shuttle this stuff away. I was curious if I could smell it from the any of the pools? Nope! It was only a visual and tactile impact. It's floating everywhere and it tickles your legs. It makes the water murky. It totally took away any inspiration I had to snorkel on site. I'm a diver, too, and know pristine waters....this was not pristine. We did not choose this resort because of its advertised snorkeling; we went for many other reasons, too. Again, we knew what it'd be like and my expectations were met: no snorkeling or swimming for us.
The food was pretty darn good! Room service was not, but we feel that that is truly a hard ask anyway. No probs with that choice. AIs are hit or miss with food and this was a reason for this reservation. Food didn't disappoint!
The main pools were very very warm. Plenty of chairs to choose from, but honestly, we found ourselves loving the peace and quiet of our swim up pool - which was also a cooler temp. I think we used a main pool for 30min total. We opted for our swim up suite and when we needed a refill, we'd walk 30s to the preferred bar and get another cocktail (insulated cups FTW!!!). Our neighbors were clearly more social than we were, as we only saw our neighbors once, for like 45 min. Other than that, the hours and hours we were in our pool, we were alone.
Jose, our concierge, was a lovely and wonderful human. He helped arrange a taxi to take us to the marina where I'd reserved a private catamaran on our anniversary (Tulum Charters - I highly recommend!). He helped coordinate some medical support we needed. He honored us with special touches for our anniversary. He was super responsive on WhatsApp. Having him on our team was a huge plus!
It was a great choice for our celebration! The food + private swim up suite + preferred club + personal service = we are a happy couple!

One thing to consider...
My wife and I just celebrated our 25th Wedding Anniversary with 6 nights at Secrets Akumal in Mexico.
It was a wonderful experience.
The staff was hardworking, friendly, and gracious. Monica, our concierge, was wonderful. Alejandro, the beach concierge was exceptional. This man works so hard everyday to see how you are doing and always offers a warm good morning. Francisco, our beach waiter also needs to be mentioned. A fine gentleman who is great at his job. Further, Eduardo, at the Sugar Reef Restaurant Bar is a wise man who you should have a conversation with! Lastly, Jorge, at the Lobby Bar, make the greatest Rum and Coke that you will ever drink.
Diego, at the Market Cafe, could not have been more attentive. (He is often working the morning patio - try it, listening to the birds and seeing the iguanas sure beats having breakfast at the air-conditioned tables.)
The food was exceptional at the restaurants, buffets, and pool side lunch setups.
The facility, for the most part, was divine. As it is 10 years old, it is showing the expected wear and tear, but nothing off putting.
We did upgrade to Preferred club - it was worth it I suppose. The lounge was convenient on check-in and check-out. My only complaint would be the stark cafeteria-like lighting. All the restaurants and common spaces set a tone with nice ambient lighting. Not so in the Preferred Lounge. Carlos, the bartender is awesome, and makes up for the office like feel of the place with his sharp wit and gregarious personality.
The one thing to consider, would be the glass shower-type door on the water closet (toilet room). If privacy is a concern of yours when using the facilities, this setup will not suffice. Even with the bathroom door closed, the large jet-tub wall is only a sheer curtain. This opening should be set as a pair of shutters or bi-fold doors. For my wife and I, who have been through every life stage and event together from childbirth to surgery recovery to every kind of medical prep and procedure, this was not a problem. However, if you are in the 'mystique ' phase of a blossoming romance, there is no real buffer...
Having said all that, we had a great time, enjoyed the beach, and met some great people.

Secrets Akumal Resort provides excellence across the board, including personalised service from resort staff, a wide variety of buffet and fine dining experiences, idyllic location with ample opportunities to explore the local sea life and other excursions that Mexico has to offer. We spent our honeymoon stress free and in luxury, with so many supposed along the way - resort staff made sure to go the extra mile to make our trip feel special. Examples of this include: putting out a ‘just married’ banner on our room door, providing prosecco and ice to our room, putting our petals and preparing a delightful jacuzzi with bubbles to enjoy on our last full day at the resort. All of these details were unprompted and a surprise to us, showing that staff had us in mind without any worry on our end.
If you have the means, you will not be disappointed by Secrets Akumal for a special occasion or holiday treat.
Thank you Secrets Akumal for making our honeymoon special!

We had the most amazing few days at Secrets Akumal. We rented a car and drove from Cancun as we were going somewhere else afterwards. It was an easy drive and a little over an hour from Cancun.
The biggest issue was the sargasso on the beach but the resort did a good job of clearing it and we were able to get in the water and enjoy the beach. A bit further down the beach from the resort where we went snorkeling it was much worse.
Everything about the resort was pretty perfect. The setting is gorgeous with tropical foliage everywhere. It was easy to get lost but by day three we pretty much figured it out! I loved finding iguanas and a few agouti.
Our room was amazing. We had a preferred ocean view room on the 3rd floor of building 3. We loved the bed, the big shower, and the in room jacuzzi tub. We had a tub on the balcony but ended up not using it as it didn’t seem super comfortable. We used our mini bar and room service. It was always great. We ordered breakfast from room service breakfast one morning and enjoyed it on our balcony.
The food was mostly very good. There were always plenty of options. Our overall favorite meal was probably Portofino. We enjoyed octopus carpaccio, lobster and prawn agnolotti and crispy pork pancetta. The coconut shrimp at Oceana was also a standout. The one big miss was the pulled pork sandwich we ordered from Barefoot grill on the beach, but we just didn’t eat it and got something else. We also enjoyed several of the bars. Manatees was great in the pool. The lobby bar was a great spot for before dinner drinks and entertainment. We also liked the beach bar and the swings. Mango margaritas were excellent but I wish I’d discovered them before the last day. We used the club lounge only a few times but the drinks and snacks there were very good.
We had amazing experiences with all the staff we came into contact with. We had a great time with the entertainment staff- Ari (or Ari, Ari Ari) was a great guide for both our snorkeling and kayaking experiences and Alan and Erik were great as well. We were able to see a turtle while snorkeling as well as fish, some of a coral reef, and stingrays. Our concierge Karen was very helpful and answered every question we had. Every server, bar tender, check in staff, etc went above and beyond our expectations.
We chose to participate in the time share/club/whatever presentation while we were there because we were offered two free massages and $100 in resort credit. The salesperson (Milos) with us was very good and personable but we did not enjoy the other people on the office area as they were more pushy. We were told it would be 1.5 hours and it was a bit over 2, but we did enjoy the reward at the end of it 😂.
We had massages- we booked them for separate rooms but they ended up having them in the same room which was very nice. We also did the hydrotherapy with Axel and he did a great job leading us through the experience.
We were able to stay on property after check out (check out is at 12, but guests can stay on property and use amenities until 5) and enjoy a little more beach and pool time.
We would absolutely come back to Secrets Akumal. It was a fantastic experience all around. We were only there 3 nights and would have loved to stay at least 5 to experience everything.

What a fantastic hotel. Delicious food and really fun activities throughout the day. Thanks to Oscar, Melina, and Mario for the fun activities. The bike tour and the snorkel tour were fantastic; we saw huge sea turtles and stingrays.

Karen was our concierge, and she helped with everything from dinner reservations to blowing up our rafts, to room service. The food was amazing. The people working there made the whole experience even better. Our pool bartenders, Freddi and Bernardo, work so hard. They really take care of their guests. They knew us and what we liked after our first visit to the bar. Antony in activities was fun! He was very informative and helpful all while having blast doing his job. Carlos in activities was the absolute best! He stopped to talk to us and make sure everything was good and if we needed anything every time we saw him. He really listened to concerns from other visitors and took the time to help them. He taught me some Spanish while making it a fun conversation. He works hard and you can tell her really cares about the guests. Always some great activities going on day and evening. The people worked hard to clear the seaweed from the beach. Although there was a lot of seaweed, it was cleared everyday by mid morning. It will be hard for me to go to another resort after this one. This one is tough to beat.
