We made a last-minute trip from 02/26-03/02. Overall, this resort was great. Check-in was smooth and quick. They did try to offer us an upgrade to stay at a different resort, but we chose adults only for a reason, so we declined it. We were placed in a partial ocean view room. They were building a new hotel next door so there was the noise when you were on your balcony, but it didn’t bother us. The room is a standard hotel room. Nothing spectacular. The sheets were not sunburn friendly and were a little rough. House keeping did a fantastic job and our mini fridge was always stocked. Loved that they had Pepsi products! In the mornings we had to go to the sports bar to get our daily coffee. This is the only place you can get a good cup of coffee, and they will add alcohol. For breakfast they only had the buffet open unless you want to continental one mid-morning. The have made to order eggs and omelets. We never left breakfast hungry. Waitstaff for breakfast was hit and miss. Sometimes we were able to get a mimosa with breakfast and other times it took so long that we took them Togo. For lunch they only have the buffet or snack bar for food. I am not a huge fan of buffets, so this was hard for me but the tacos in the buffet were tasty. For dinner the Kulinarium was our favorite, followed by the steak house. The Italian one was buffet for appetizer, but the dinner was served but the Asian one was all buffet. We loved that there were no reservations or strict dress codes for men. The pool area was nice. There were five different pools, and they all had different vibes. We stayed towards the middle one where the activities took place. The waterslides were fun and fast. We never had an issue getting a chair, but umbrellas were hard to come by. There is no pool service for drinks but there is a pool cart that does come by. We just walked to the pool bars to get our drinks. There is not much of a party vibe at this resort which we liked. I would say average age was 50+. We did not go to the other resorts for the parties. The beach is AMAZING. We walked to the other Riu resorts, but they would not give us drinks like we were told they would. You can walk one mile to see the dolphins at the Dreams Resort or go the other direction and walk two miles to the Riu resorts. The beach is well maintained and not a ton of seaweed. Overall, the resort was clean, service was great, drinks were tasty, and food was good. It was a good four days. If we stayed longer, we would have got stir crazy.

Overall we had a great 11 nights at the Latino. Modern resort that is impeccably clean. Staff were all very friendly and efficient, Nely and Vicki in the main buffet were just incredible and so very lovely. A la carte restaurants were ok, we did however prefer the food in the buffet. Room was large and well maintained, Alfonso did a great job and was great with the towel pets every day. Drinks and great, plenty of options and a lot of branded spirits too. Pools were all great, we preferred the quiet pool next to the water park. You can go down at 11am and still manage to find empty sun loungers so no need to be getting up super early to reserve. All of the party’s are held at the other hotels which suited us perfectly. There is constantly stuff going on though and I don’t think you can get bored. Guests are very mixed and there were couples old and young, families (grown up children of course) hen parties, 60th birthday groups, everything. Tips - As a high proportion of guests were American we found people tipped frequently so we felt a little obligated to do the same. We took lots of $1s with us anyway so wasn’t an issue, we did $1or2 for a drink and $2-5 each meal. Reception will change notes for you if you do just end up with higher anyway. Visited Isla Mujeres, did this on our own without an organised trip and it was really easy. Took an uber to the ferry port and caught a ferry over there, they run every 30 minutes and was someone there to help with tickets etc. hire a golf buggy and you can really explore the island. Have stayed in Playa Car before so did find the location of this hotel a little isolated but Ubers etc are possible if you did want/need to get out. Overall would Would recommend to others.

Annual group winter trip of 6 couples staying at the Riu Latino; half for 7 and the other half for 10 days PROS: New beautiful resort Adults-only Super clean with hard-working staff Large rooms and bathrooms Balconies all had at least partial ocean view (above the first floor) Beautiful fluffy golden sand 5 km beach for easy walking 5 big pools; 2 with swimup bars 6 Water slides for adults Daily mid-day water aerobics was fun Riu app request for room maintenance and supplies was immediate Bar cart service at pools and beach (not on demand types of drinks though) CONS: Resort needs many more bathrooms and stalls everywhere but especially by the restaurants Need bathrooms and bars right on the beach Need boardwalks to get to beach through deep sand from pool area Nothing to do or see within quick proximity on this new resort peninsula except busy Isla Mujeres Need more buffet wait staff, especially for breakfast The restaurant and buffet food was ok but not great and lacked variety for 5* resort Nightly entertainment was not very good; except for Rock Live group and Michael Jackson lip-synching dancers Pool games are fun but the proximity of the pools means that the music and noise levels overlap Note: We didn't take the shuttle buses to the other Riu's for the 4 themed parties; 2 with kids. It just didn't seem worth it. Summary: We would not return to this area or resort. We would find something closer to the Riviera Maya area to be closer to the excursions. The Royalton and Barcelo Tropicale were better for roughly the same cost.

We were looking for a less expensive all-inclusive option, so we booked a week at this hotel. We normally stay at higher-end, luxury resorts in Cancun, but we just wanted sunshine without breaking the bank. Would we stay here again? Absolutely--it is a very clean, new facility with an amazing staff. We had a great time. Ages of guests ranged from 20’s to 70s, so it was an interesting group of people; we were happy that there were no children allowed. Our check-in was perfect with Richie. I had e-mailed ahead of our trip to let them know we were celebrating a special occasion. They even sent us champagne and strawberries to celebrate. We had a garden view room (3060) which to our surprise also was a partial ocean view, and oh, what a view! This was our first time at a Riu resort, and Richie really made us feel welcome. The room was clean and in good repair, and housekeeping was great. The mini bar was stocked, and while there was also hard liquor in the room, we never touched it as we had plenty to drink all day. The only complaint about the room is that it was quite loud. The mini fridge and a/c unit made a lot of noise shutting on and off at night. Also, the shape of the resort means that many rooms face the outdoor theater and disco entrance. We ended up putting on the white noise setting on our phones, and then it was just fine. Plan accordingly, and you will sleep very well! Two things I missed, which are very minor things, were having robes and having a lighted magnifying mirror in the bathroom as the bathroom lighting wasn’t great for us older ladies putting on makeup! The other food reviews ring true. The food is not the best. It's not awful. I really don't like to eat buffet at dinner and prefer to be served. The Italian place has an appetizer buffet, but the entrees there are a la carte. The Japanese restaurant is all buffet, and of course, there is a buffet dinner at the big buffet. We did like Kulinarium which was all table service, and we ate there twice. We did not eat at the steak house as we were told by other guests to get the steak at the Italian restaurant instead. The house red wines were not to my taste, but the Sauvignon Blanc was very nice and became my "go to" at dinner. Our morning waiter at the buffet, Brian, was the absolute best. He knew our beverage orders after day one, and he worked so hard, never missing a beat even during peak times. Coffee was available at the 24/7 sports bar, and each morning we would get a nice, fresh cup rather than relying on the coffee maker in the room. The shows were typical, cheesy, so-bad-they-were-good shows that are at Cancun resorts. The bar area in the theater had a terrific bartender named Rene. He took good care of us, and he really seemed to be enjoying himself. The drinks are not strong anywhere, even if you tip, but ask for a double or order two or whatever -- it's included. You have to ask for specific brands or you get house alcohol. I believe that the entertainment staff and bartenders wanted everyone to have fun, and we did. I was happy to see that most guests did tip the staff here as everyone works so hard. The five pools were very nice. We did not find a quiet pool, because the two pools with swim-up bars were spaced between the other three pools. There was a bar cart which came around the pools where you could get drinks if you didn’t want to go to the pool bar. The water park looked fun, and there were lots of people using it on the most crowded days of our stay—we are older and decided not to risk injury, lol. The beach was really lovely as was the coconut tree grove that runs between the pools and the beach. The beach is a long walk to the bathrooms. There was drink service of sorts on the beach which was a waiter bringing a big tray of prepared popular drinks you could choose from—pina coladas, Miami Vice, beer, etc. It worked just fine for us. When we were there, the resort was very full. If we wanted a front-row beach chair with an umbrella, we had to meet the attendant at around 7am. They would sometimes put chairs (but no umbrellas) in front of us later in the day. For the pool, if we wanted a specific area, we also had to be out there around 7am. Here is my only real complaint about this resort: Bathrooms are woefully inadequate in number and location. If you are on the beach, it’s a 5-minute walk (or pee in the sea!). There were 5 women’s toilet stalls TOTAL to service 5 swimming pools and the entire beach area (2 located behind Mezcal and 3 located at the main pool area). These were constantly busy, and they were constantly being cleaned so it was slow if there was a line. So, you know that everyone is just hanging out at the swim-up bars and peeing in the pools; we avoided the two pools with bars for that reason. One morning just after 9am, both of the women’s restrooms were locked for cleaning, simultaneously. People were definitely already out and about, so why were both closed at the same time? There was a nice man who offered to watch the door for me so that I could use the men’s room. It is a LONG walk to the lobby to use the one set of restrooms available there (which are also a long walk from the restaurants/theater considering these restrooms serve everything). I don’t know how they fix this issue without major infrastructure changes. All in all, we did have a great stay, met nice people, and the beach views (and coconut grove) with soft, white sand are gorgeous. It is what I would call budget luxury, and I would definitely consider other Riu Resorts now that we know what they are like. It’s a great get away at a reasonable price. The staff really made our stay memorable.

After staying at the Riu Palace Costa Mujeres for the past six years every February, we decided to try the adults only Riu Latino 2 miles down the road. We were very happy with our decision. Riu Latino is a wonderful resort and the few things that make it a "classic Riu" rather than a Palace in our opinion weren't that big of a deal to have to do without (ie: room service, pool waiters walking around, a Mexican restaurant). We did our research before we arrived by reading reviews and watching resort videos on YouTube, so we were very prepared when we arrived and knew what to expect. Check in was so quick and Dulcee who checked us in was lovely. Our room was ready which was unexpected since it was 12:24 pm when we arrived. We traveled with friends and we asked if our rooms could be close. They said sure and put them right next door to us. That was so great! We had both booked ocean front rooms and I had requested the side with the elevator which they gave us. We had room 4140 and our friends were room 4141. Both were terrific rooms with beautiful views of the pools and ocean and being that close to the elevator was so convenient. Our housekeeping was excellent all week and we never had to request anything from them or maintenance and our beer fridge was kept well stocked as well. We did leave money each day for the beverage guy as well as our housekeepers. We had a true king bed and we felt it was very firm, not an issue for us for just one week. As everyone else has said, the resort can't get any cleaner. The grounds are well tended and are growing in very nicely. We enjoyed seeing the iguanas that have taken up residence in the beds down by the pools and loved the flocks of pelicans that fly overhead all day. We had great weather, only one short storm on Sunday but that was it for rain. The rest of the week was in the 80's during the day and 70's in the evenings. I was glad I had packed a light sweater to take with me in the evenings a few of the nights. I was happy to see that every evening the ladies were dressed up nicely and the gents all had on nice shorts and shirts at dinner time. Service everywhere we experienced was excellent. We never met anyone who wasn't smiling and trying to be helpful. Our favorite server was Jenny at the outside seating area in the buffet. We sat in her station for breakfast and lunch every day. She's a gem. As far as food goes, we loved Milan and ate there three times. We all loved the filet with gorgonzola cheese and our friends also tried the lasagna and the salmon and said both were excellent. We had a server named Angel and he was great! We did the steakhouse one night, and has others have said, it can be hit or miss. I had a pretty good ribeye but my husband and friend each got one that was tough and inedible. So we only went there one night. Our friends did the Asian restaurant and said they were happy with the set up and enjoyed their meals. We all thought the buffet was excellent, for breakfast, lunch and dinner you can't go wrong. I highly recommend checking out the soups every day at lunch. I had the cream of corn, cream of pumpkin (the best every), cream of spinach, cream of mushroom, cream of carrot...all to die for. Not something I eat at home so these were all quite a treat for me. There is a manned carving station at the buffet most meals which was delicious. One night it was duck a la orange. Very nice!!!! We spent our week at the swim up bar pool, Mezcal. Shout out to the bartenders there, they were attentive, fun and made great drinks. The towel game goes on but it's not too bad. We saw many chairs unclaimed as late at 10:30 some days. The guys who man the drink carts are very popular and do a great job keeping everyone going and happy. The music played was mostly American disco during the morning and early afternoons, then switched to local bands. Never overwhelming. From what we could see at the activity pool, the entertainment team works hard and play fun games. We got to enjoy the Silent Disco the week were there which is one of our favorites. So much fun! We also saw the show that was acrobatic which was very well done. Not sure what it was called. If there is one suggestion we would like to make to Riu Latino, it would be to have Tecate Light at ALL the bars, not just two. My husband really likes that beer and so he was disappointed that he could only get it at Velvet or the Sports Bar. Why? If it's available for guests to have at those bars, why not at the restaurants and the pool bars? That was a disappointment for us. He was grateful that the beverage guy put Sol in our room fridge for him, though. Velvet, the lobby bar, sure was a jumping place in the evenings. We all enjoyed meeting up there for pre-dinner drinks every evening. So in conclusion, don't hesitate to book this resort. It's great and you will have a ball! We would definitely return.
