Another great visit to Iberostar Grand Paraiso! So many excellent things to say, with only a few areas for improvement. Airport Shuttle: As the beneficiaries of Iberostar double black club members, we have a private shuttle that takes us to/from the airport directly to the resort, only about a 15-minute drive. The situation when arriving at the airport can only be described as chaos and pandemonium. Fortunately, our driver was holding a sign with our names, so it was clear that was where we needed to go. This is probably one of the best perks of club membership as far as transportation goes. Check-in: As club members, we are able to check in at the Star Prestige lounge with incredibly knowledgeable and helpful staff. We were traveling with 2 friends who were not Iberostar Club members, and they were allowed to check in with us in the prestige lounge which enhanced their experience as well. We were then taken by golf cart (Mexican limo as the driver called it) to our rooms where they moved our luggage into our rooms. Rooms: The rooms are spacious and kept immaculate with housekeeping and turn down service daily. The mini fridge is stocked daily with beverages of your choice. Our only request was extra juice which they filled daily. There were also glass jars filled with cookies, chips and nuts that were refilled daily. The air conditioning in incredibly cold and quiet. The balconies in building 71 have breathtaking views of the ocean and come with a wicker swinging chair and a loveseat. However, the balcony is closed on the sides and only open on the front, so it gets almost no breeze and is very hot, so we rarely used it. The view from there, however, is stunning. The humidity also keeps clothes from drying when hung on the rack on the balcony, so we ended up hanging those in the bathroom if there was any hope they would dry. Wishes for the room: More outlets in the bathroom and by the bed. Those outlets should all include USB ports with the higher demands in technology. Food: Where does one begin? Prior to arriving you are asked which restaurants you would like for reservations, but if you’ve never been here before, you have no idea. We simply ask the resort to schedule those for us before we arrive and then we can change/cancel as we see fit. We dined at Toni’s Steakhouse, L’Atelier (French), Venecia (Italian), Haikua (hibachi grill/Japanese). One night we went to the buffet. We had breakfast each morning at the buffet (didn’t use room service) and the food was incredible! Fresh fruit, omelets made to order, eggs Benedict made to order, breads, pastries, authentic Mexican food, mimosas, bloody Mary’s, antipasti, you name it. Drinks: As expected, the drinks flow constantly and are plentiful. We discovered coconut margaritas and coconut mojitos which quickly became our favorites. We also enjoyed the occasional mini beer and tequila cream shots. What we did notice is that the consistency in drinks varies widely by bar and bartender. In some locations, the coconut margaritas were super creamy with Tajin on the rim of the glass. Other locations had very runny coconut margaritas. It would be nice to know what to expect every time a drink is ordered that it’s going to be the same to avoid disappointment. The bartenders are all super friendly and quick to fill your order. Improvement: The bars do offer water whenever you want, but it would be wonderful to have a daily infused water at the bars that rotates — cucumber water, lime water, watermelon water, etc. Staff: This is what makes his resort superb. From housekeeping to maintenance staff to security, and of course, butlers, wait staff, etc., everyone greets you with a big smile. You are called “familia” and made to welcome everywhere you go on the resort. It’s fantastic! Our butlers met us in the lobby and would ask what we need for the day, or what would make our day “perfect.” They go out of their way to do whatever needs to be done. One area of improvement would be follow-up. I spoke on 2 occasions with a gentleman (not sure of his name) who was a butler. We asked if we could arrange a golf cart tour of the Iberostar 5-resort complex. My husband has had a hip replacement and the walk is not possible for him. He said he would check for us. I heard nothing, so when I saw him next, I asked again and he said he was working on it. That was 2 days ago, so I’ve given up at this point. That was disappointing. Simply following up with a “yes” or “no” would have been all I needed. The recreation staff is AMAZING! They work incredible hours, go through costume changes and get guests fired up to participate in their events, which are numerous and a blast. They will dance with you, kick a ball for you or even belly flop for you! Pools/Hot Tubs: There are 2 large pools - the quiet pool with no music or loud discussions (2 hot tubs) and the primary pool which is nearly as long as a football field with 4 hot tubs and a swim up bar. The music is playing and it’s a good time. The hot tub we used was not hot, but warmer than the pool. Two downsides: All of the cabanas and lounge chairs have cushions, but when it rains, they are soaked for hours. Sitting on wet cushions is not fun. I would suggest getting pool floats (the rectangular foam/vinyl-covered ones) to use as chair cushions, and then each guest would also have a pool float to use. They are easy to wipe off and dry, and are thick enough to be a great cushion. The other downside is ants. There are trails of little biting ants that we found under our chairs in the cabanas. I was able to get them under control by spraying them with my sunscreen, but if you drop any food, there will be a huge number of them in no time. Also, if you set your bag on the concrete, they will be all over it. Entertainment: The recreation staff at the resort seems to work incredibly long days! The same staff that is at the main pool all day getting guests fired up with competitions, Zumba, etc. are also the ones at night who are playing bingo, karaoke, setting up/hosting the main lobby entertainment. We saw them everywhere. I hope they are compensated well. For me, personally, all day in the sun makes me fairly uninterested in evening entertainment, but for the youngsters there is a disco club at the on-resort shopping plaza called Galaxy that is very popular. I did enjoy the all-female mariachi band one evening with a singer that had the voice of an angel. Resort overall: This is a high-end resort with marble, tile, sculptures and incredible artwork everywhere you look. The main lobby atrium is filled with natural tropical plants and there are gorgeous murals on the ceiling. You can tell that great care is taken to keep the grounds and buildings in excellent condition. Tipping: Tips are not required, but we do carry small bills to tip staff members who are going above and beyond during our stay. I like to leave a substantial tip in our room for both our housekeeping staff and turn down service the day we leave to show our appreciation. My husband handles tipping bartenders and occasional waiters. We don’t tip them all, but others have served us on multiple occasions, so we recognize them.
