With every passing year, bit by bit, acceptance of LGBTQ love throughout the world improves. Unfortunately, many parts of the world still aren't accepting of love in all its forms. But thankfully, more and more options are opening up for queer couples in amazing destinations. To that end, we've collected some of our favorites for 2018! Here they are, in no particular order:
Iceland, long-known as a liberal and tolerant place, is home to the beautiful city of Reykjavik. Famous Nordic hospitality, a rich culture, and stunning natural beauty always nearby in the form of fjords and glaciers, Reykjavik is a delight. LGBTQ couples can largely rest assured that they will feel welcome here -- after all, this is a country known for, among other things, being the first to ever elect an openly-gay head of state!
New Orleans, Louisiana
Jazz-soaked New Orleans is one of the best-known honeymoon destinations in the United States, and what makes it even better is that LGBTQ couples can get in on the fun and romance without worry. Festivals galore, incredible music, unique local cuisine, and much more await gay and non-binary couples looking for loads of romance, lots of fun, and a culture that isn't like any other romantic destination in the world.
Amsterdam, The Netherlands
The Netherlands has been a largely gay-friendly place for a long time, and today is no different. Known for their liberal attitude, Amsterdam is a unique city of canals with lots of culture combined with a distinctly small-town feel. Here, amazing museums, world-class cafes, pleasant courtyards, exciting shopping, and festivals and concerts abound. Check out the Van Gogh museum, laze around a Dutch cafe, hit up a pumping nightclub, explore craft breweries, or picnic in one of the city's beautiful parks. This is a city where you can enjoy yourselves without having to worry about locals giving you a second look.
Cape Town, South Africa
While Africa is not a continent known for having many friendly honeymoon destinations for LGBTQ travelers, Cape Town is a queer honeymoon mecca. In fact, it's been called "the gay capital of Africa," with a constitution that was established under Nelson Mandela making it illegal to discriminate based on sexual orientation. And the honeymoon fun here never stops: luxurious resorts, pulse-pounding safaris, incredible beaches, dynamic city adventures, and outdoor recreation abound here. For gay-themed fun, there are plenty of gay bars and clubs along with outrageously fun drag shows, pride festivals, and more.
Uruguay is a freedom-loving country...and that includes the freedom to love whoever your heart desires. Often overlooked by honeymooners, Uruguay is a delightful and prosperous South American honeymoon destination with a welcoming, cosmopolitan atmosphere. Add in the beautiful beaches, famously casual vibe, thriving art and cultural scene, and mild year-round climate, Montevideo is a honeymooner's dream come true.
Turks and Caicos, British West Indies
For LGBTQ honeymooners looking for an island paradise, look no further than Turks and Caicos, in the British West Indies. Relax with a cocktail at a secluded gay-friendly resort, explore ecotourism opportunities and perfect honeymoon activities like snorkeling and boating, and rejuvenate after your wedding with a day at one of the country's magnificent spas.
Curaçao, Dutch Caribbean
While the Caribbean tends to lag behind many other destinations in terms of gay and queer acceptance, Curaçao is a delightful exception to the rule. This means that couples seeking a Caribbean escape still have a fantastic option; with the island's laid-back attitude toward forms of love that don't follow the traditional mold. Until other Caribbean island destinations catch up, Curaçao is a brilliant option with all the hallmarks of a perfect beach getaway: lost of coast, a chill island vibe, top-notch resorts, stunning coves, abundant aquatic activities like snorkeling, fishing, sunset cruises, and Scuba diving.
Gay-friendly Kauai is the perfect honeymoon destination for LGBTQ couples who aren't into the club scene and just want a relaxed, rejuvenating island with stunning surroundings for their dream honeymoon. While Oahu (also a delightfully gay-friendly honeymoon hotspot) might have more in the way of clubs and bars, Kauai is a place where you can relax, romance, and adventure the days away with some of the most stunning tropical sights in the entire United States. Explore the Napali Coast, take a sunset cruise, laze on the beach, go mountain biking, soar through the sky on a parasail...the possibilities are endless for outdoorsy LGBTQ couples who aren't interested in honeymoon partying, and would rather just soak up the sun and beauty of a truly unique natural treasure.
The exciting, cosmopolitan Spanish city of Barcelona is a long-time LGBTQ honeymoon favorite. With gay beaches, gay bars, and just plain gay-friendly people everywhere you go, you'll feel a warm welcome at a Flamenco performance as a jazz club. Free to snuggle over a picnic in a beautiful verdant park, and comfortable holding hands as you check into your hotel.
New York City, New York
Always on the forefront of gay acceptance and progressivism, New York City is an undeniably queer-friendly honeymoon destination with all the romantic getaway trimmings. This is a city that, for romantic getaways, needs no introduction! With some of the most sought-after sightseeing in the world, some of the most iconic sights in the United States, and an endless array of fun to be had, New York City is a mecca for gay honeymoon fun. And even couples who want to combine outdoor adventure with fun in the ultimate metropolis can hop on a train and be in the woods, hiking a trail, in thirty minutes to an hour, meaning that New York is truly a honeymoon destination that has it all.
