There are a million reasons to love Maui. We honeymooned there, and have gone back repeatedly for magical, romantic rendezvous more times we can count. If you’re seeking a memorable honeymoon, here are our Top Seven Go-To-Maui-Heaven reasons to consider this paradise.
1. You Name it, Maui's Got it.
Maui combines the best of both worlds – a sophisticated destination, yet a wealth of natural wonders to explore. You’ll discover a dormant volcano, hiking trails, snorkel and scuba destinations, and some of the world’s most beautiful beaches. Added to that are scores of rave-worthy restaurants, spectacular shopping, lavish hotels ripe for romance, and gorgeous golf courses – and you’ve got a whole in one for your trip.
2. It's Your Special Home-Away-From Home.
Fairmont Kea Lani, which is Hawaii’s only all-suite and villa luxury oceanfront resort, is a must. The villas are your personal “home in a hotel,” with oceans of amenities – plunge pools, barbecue grills (although the chef can come in and prepare dinner for you), full kitchens with Nespresso machines, washer/dryer, and full breakfast included every morning, to name just a few.
We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again – if you only eat at one restaurant on Maui, make it a go at Ko. This phenomenal signature restaurant at the Fairmont Kea Lani serves “plantation food,” and has justifiably won culinary awards too numerous to mention. Last year the Fairmont Kea Lani also completed a $7 Million build of its Willow Stream Spa. The new 9,000-square-foot spa features locally inspired experiences that combine Maui-sourced products with ancient Hawaiian tradition, plus the latest in spa technology. Signature services include the Nalu (Wave) Suite, with a state-of-the-art wave massage table, and a Waterfall Suite offering Vichy shower treatments with infrared technology.
3. World's Best Beaches.
It’s easy to see why Kaanapali Beach has won awards too numerous to mention. On any given day, you’ll see tons of snorkelers drinking in the waters, while locals frequently dive off of Black Rock into the ocean. Take our advice: Visit the Sheraton Maui’s Cliff Dive Bar on any day around 5:30PM, to witness the resort’s cliff diver jump into the Pacific below against stunning Black Rock sunsets as a backdrop – while you snack on pupus and cocktails. This is a “must-do” when in Maui, and especially at the Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa. On the menu: the “Da Poi Dog” cocktail made with locally produced Ocean vodka, yuzu and Thai basil. When you sit back, take a sip, and watch the cliff diver jump headfirst into the Pacific – your heart will skip a beat.
Worried about how you’ll afford it? Starwood’s “Honeywishes” program lets you register your honeymoon with its bridal registry – so your wedding gifts can feature a Hawaiian experience instead of just matching china for your dining room. With your personal Starwood honeymoon registry, you can create your perfect honeymoon stay at Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa. This can include a premier snorkel cruise, the Maui Nui Luau, dinner, couple’s massage – and much more. For the ultimate dining experience, schedule the $175pp “Dinner Under The Stars,” so you can dine a deux, along, near the pool, under the Big Dipper.
4. More Hula for Less Moolah at the Maui El Dorado.
We highly recommend an Outrigger condominium at the Maui El Dorado, as prices for Maui El Dorado accommodations range from $135 to $389 per night, depending on the season. If you play it right – who can beat a little more than one hundred dollars per night, for magical Maui? There are several swimming pools set among perfectly manicured grounds. Inside each unit, you will find spacious accommodations featuring full kitchens with microwave, refrigerator, coffee maker and toaster, along with a living room with flat-screen TV, and bedrooms with queen-sized beds.
The Maui El Dorado is situated in an ideal location – right off the golf course in Kaanapali Beach. You’re also a five-minute walk away from Whaler’s Village, where you can dine at great restaurants such as Leilani’s and the Hula Grill (both of which we highly recommend). If you’ve rented a car, the Maui El Dorado is just a five-minute drive from the old whaling town of Lahaina, and its famous Front Street, where you can enjoy the comedy magic of Warren & Annabelle’s, or divine dinners at Bubba Gump Shrimp Company and Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse, which we also highly, highly recommend.
5. An Ocean of Activities for Magical Memories.
One of our favorite nightspots is Warren & Annabelle’s on Front Street in Lahaina. At Warren&Annabelle’s, you see comedy magicians performing hilarious up-close sleight-of-hand magic that will dazzle you.
6. Live like Marilyn Monroe.
I had the pleasure to visit the Marilyn Monroe spa at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa. Like the world-famous actress/icon, the spa named after her is warm, inviting and deserving to be embraced. I have to say – I had one of the best-ever facials of my life here. The 80-minute facial, the $180 Golden Glow, included a wealth of the Marilyn Monroe spa products, which are made in Germany and are 70% organic. The facial included three cleanings containing a chamomile and witch hazel cleanser, with borage seed for antiaging, a cleaning with a Smart Pro Clarisonic, and a rose facial polish exfoliator. Other product applications included rosehip capsules, and a rose/pomegranate oil for the best-ever head-shoulders/scalp massage I have ever received – in a life filled with spa treatments. After a rubber mask treatment was applied to my face, I had a foot massage with hot stones, along with a hand massage with citrus lime cream. This facial was as silken in its service as a spa treatment can get, featuring showstopping stress-relieving massage and gorgeous aromas.
7. The Famous Lomi-Lomi Massage.
Try it! The lomi-lomi Hawaiian massage that I received at the Sheraton Maui Resort and Spa, was so relaxing, was so stress-relieving, that I took a four-hour nap afterwards. After this treatment, I wasn’t just jelly – I was officially Smucker’s. This spa is a Trip Advisor winner, and it’s easy to see why: it includes facials with gorgeous Eminence of Hungary products (one of the very best luxury brands, in my book), along with locally made-in-Maui Queen Bee facial products featuring honey from a local apiary.
Coming from Boston? We used the luxury transportation services of Boston Carriage, which offers 24/7 service and extremely competitive rates to Logan Airport. This is a first-class, luxury car and limo company that is the only way to go when you’re traveling in the Boston area – and even abroad!
Enroute to Maui: For two days, we stayed at the Residence Inn in Los Angeles at the LAX airport, which is an all-suite delightful retreat. Just a short drive from El Segundo, the South Bay, Santa Monica, Venice Beach, Downtown LA and Hollywood, you can easily take in the sights before heading back to your luxurious “home away from home” for some rest and relaxation.
While in LA: We drove to Universal Studios to take in the delights there. Wow – where do we start the rave review? You’ll love the live animal acts show plus the special effects show, as well as the studio tour. Don’t miss the rides, especially the Revenge of the Mummy and the Transformers. Now open is the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. And make sure to have your picture taken with “Marilyn Monroe.”
