Property Overview

Experience the best that Tuscany has to offer in just one day on Dark Rome’s Tuscany from Rome Day Trip. With transport, lunch and wine-tastings included, we take the hassle out of doing it yourself – leaving you the time and freedom to enjoy all that Tuscany has to offer.

Our day starts in Montepulciano where we meet an expert local guide. Explore the quiet streets and piazzas of this medieval hill town, which dates back to before the Roman Empire, all the way to Etruscan times – with ruins and relics to prove it. Your guide will teach you about the history and culture of Tuscany as you relax into the slower pace of life here. Take some time at the end of the tour to pick up some of Montepulciano’s world-famous wine or explore the medieval wine cellar, still in use today.

Then we’re back on the bus and on to our perfectly timed next stop. The winding roads of Tuscany take us to a valley where nestles an abbey. All things according to plan we’ll be in time to see the monks file in for their daily Gregorian chants, an ancient ritual that will leave you captivated. Time for lunch next and it’s a short drive to the vineyards of Montalcino. We’ll stop at a family-run vineyard where you’ll take a tour of the wine cellars before settling in for your meal (cooked, in the great Italian tradition, by a perfectly-synchronized group of grandmothers).

We’ll taste five wines with lunch including a Brunello di Montalcino. All those you taste are grown from the vines surrounding the farmhouse or on the family’s other vineyard, so you’re drinking it straight from the source. The food is seasonal and firmly adheres to the Tuscan traditions of fresh, locally sourced ingredients prepared simply. You’ll even get to sample pici pasta – a local delicacy you won’t find at home. If you like what you taste, you can stock up on wine here (we think it’s some of the best in the region and they even deliver worldwide!) or you can hold off until our next stop – Pienza. After all that food and wine we’d recommend grabbing a quick espresso, standing at the counter of the local caffè just as the locals do. You’ll need the energy for what comes next – shopping. Your tour leader (with you for the day to explain all the sights of Tuscany as you pass them and to give you a little more insight into local traditions) will point you in the direction of the best cheese and wine shops where you can sample all before you buy.

We’d recommend some pecorino cheese (made from sheep’s milk), balsamic cream and maybe some pici pasta and wild boar sauce to share when you get home. It’s up to you though – you’ll find all of Tuscany’s best delicacies in Pienza along with a beautiful church and breathtaking vistas if you’d rather spend your time wandering.

Full of food, wine and the beauty of the Tuscan scenery we’ll climb back onto the bus for the easy, two-hour ride back to Rome where you’ll arrive just in time for dinner (if you have space!). In one day you’ll get a taste of Tuscany – from its stunning rolling hills to its delectable food and wine and its relaxed, traditional culture. Plan on a return visit though because with Tuscany, one time is never enough.
