Tobago Overview
Tobago is truly a tropical island paradise for two. Couples who want to really relax after the wedding will find it to be the perfect hideaway. You can take the island's scenic beauty at your own pace and spend your honeymoon days together in tranquil bliss. It's also a potential eden for destination weddings, so whisk yourselves away and tie the knot in paradise but be sure to check out our Guide to Marrying in Tobago first.
This is one of the most unspoiled islands in the Caribbean. It is blessed by nature from top to bottom. Over 200 species of colorful birds fly overhead. Lush tropical flora and fauna surround you and the vivid colors of exotic corals and marine life await you below the clear waters.
Palm lined beaches, soft white sand, a turquoise sea, comfortable hotels and enough to see and do to offer activity when you want it are just a few of the things that couples fall in love with here.
Diving, snorkeling, bird watching, deep sea fishing, hiking and golf are popular pastimes that delight active couples. There are no skyscrapers or high rises. Pristine rain forests, seabird sanctuaries, turtle breeding grounds and wonderful reefs are just of few of the things you can explore together.
The feeling is barefoot but the amenities are state-of-the-art. All the ingredients for enchanted, low-key honeymoon happiness are right here!
Don't Miss
For such a small island, Tobago has many attractions. Because it is wonderfully undeveloped, most of them are natural. You can drive from Scarborough, the capital on the Southeastern coast to Charlottesville, a charming village in the North in about 4 hours. The distance is short but the island is hilly and roads can be rough and curvy.
Most of the tourist attractions which don't involve sports are in the South. Scarborough has a small collection of little shops along Burnett St. and a picturesque church. Kimme's Sculpture Museum in the South and Flagstaff Hill in the North are other places to enjoy. If you go to Speyside in the north, don't miss a boat trip to Little Tobago Island, one of the major bird sanctuaries in the Caribbean.
Wherever you go, untouched beaches will surround you. Pack a picnic and make one your own for a day!
- PIGEON POINT BEACH: This is the place that you see in travel brochures but seldom find. Luxuriate on the sand as you soak up the sun and the scenic beauty. It's well worth the small admission fee.
- STORE BAY: This small cove is the best place to try local dishes. You can try a wide variety of them at food stands along the beach, and take a swim between courses!
- SUNDAY SCHOOL: This is the name for a public party that begins every Sunday night after midnight on the street corners of Buccoo. You can dance till dawn as you walk along the street and sway to the rhythm of different bands. Throughout the island, you'll also see signs announcing spontaneous beach parties where visitors are welcome.
- OIL DOWN: Try this popular local dish made of breadfruit and salt pork or beef flavored with coconut milk and you'll enjoy the true taste of Tobago.
- SCARBOROUGH MARKET: This busy market that sells a little bit of every island thing is full of local color. Don't forget your camera!
- FT. KING GEORGE: Tobago's military history is on display in this quiet spot shaded by lush tropical foliage. Views of the bay are spectacular from high on the hill. There is a small museum and a Fine Arts Center that exhibits the works of local artisans. 84 Fort Street, Scarborough.
- GLASS BOTTOM BOAT TOUR: This is a great way to see colorful marine life for those who don't like to dive or snorkel. Boats leave from Pigeon Point in the morning.
Tips and Advice
- HOW TO GET THERE: Tobago is 22 miles from Piarco Airport in Port of Spain, Trinidad. The best way to get there is to fly from Port of Spain. Water taxis are available, but you have to get to the Port of Spain departure points, schedules are sparse, and seas can be rough.
- TAXIS: Taxis can be recognized by the letter H on their blue license plates. Rates from the airport to your hotel are posted on a sign in the airport. Prices range from $25-$65. Many hotels in the Crown Point area are within walking distance.
- AREA CODE: 868
- ELECTRICITY: 110 volts
- CURRENCY: The official currency is the Trinidadian dollar. Most places will accept US dollars. There are only a handful of bank branches and ATM's in Scarborough and in the Crown Point airport.
- TELEPHONE: Be careful. Most hotels levy a high surcharge for international calls. If you plan to take your cell phone, your cell company has to have a roaming agreement with Telecommunications Services of Trinidad and Tobago.
- TIPS AND TAXES: Most hotels add a 10% surcharge to your bill. Most restaurants include a 10% service charge. Cab drivers expect small tips of about 10%.
- INTERNET: If your hotel doesn't have this service, bring your computer to an internet cafe such as J-Puter Tech in Scarborough or the Original House of Pancakes (Pancakes are extra) in Crown Point.
- RENTAL CARS: Rent a four wheel drive if you plan to explore as taxis can be expensive. Driving is on the left, British style. Highways are smooth but coastal and interior roads can be rough. There are few gas stations so fill up in Crown Point or in Scarborough before you take off.
