In an elegant oasis amidst the arid lands of Samburu, Joy’s Camp is the only camp operating in Shaba National Reserve, so guests have the whole reserve to themselves. The camp overlooks a large natural spring in a landscape dotted with lush springs and rocky, river gorges. The rare Beisa Oryx, reticulated giraffe and Grevy’s zebra frequent the area.
Each of the 10 luxurious tents is uniquely decorated with handmade glass and the vibrant fabrics of the local nomadic tribes, creating a chic, sophisticated and stylish camp. The bright en-suite tents are completed with private verandas with breathtaking views of the surrounding hills. View game, relax and soak in the truly wild environment Shaba has to offer. Aside from the accommodations, Joy’s Camp has a dining area and lounge, a gift shop and a swimming pool with service from the bar.
Joy’s Camp is built on the site of Joy Adamson’s tented home in Shaba National Reserve. The site was also home to Penny the leopard, the heroine of Joy’s last book, Queen of Shaba. The camp even incorporates a small gallery of Joy Adamson memorabilia, kindly loaned by the “Elsa Trust”.
Most impressively, Joy’s Camp has been named ‘Best Sustainable Hotel in Africa’ by the International Hotel Awards, and has been awarded the GOLD-level Eco-rating Certificate by Ecotourism Kenya in recognition of its outstanding level of environmental responsibility and its dedication to the support and integration of local communities.
