The Modern Side of Safari

The great outdoors has never felt so luxurious until Robin Pope Safaris’ Mkulumadzi Lodge. Our suite was complete with a canopy bed, plush seating areas, and sparkling bath fixtures–but the most impressive feature of all? A missing wall. Not separated from nature with panes of glass, the room invited in the breeze from the Mkulmadzi river and sounds of the bush…all with the comforts of a honeymoon suite.

The spacious bedroom was a breath of fresh air (literally), with sunshine casting through the open side and the twinkle of the stars shining through at night. Look closely and you can see our bed was adorned with towels crafted into bride and groom swans. How cute is that tissue veil?!

And thoughtful touches didn’t end with our welcome to the property. Each morning when we came back from safari (see our last post on our adventures through Malawi’s Majete National Park), our bed was adorned with new charming towel art. These elephants were too sweet.

Our room stood with rivers on two sides, monkeys and bush babies swinging on nearby trees, and hippos and crocs relaxing on the shores below so even relaxing in the room was an adventure. We were so enthralled with our suite that we ordered our first meal at Mkulumadzi as room service to our porch. We had the most delicious butternut squash, beet and carrot salad.

Finally venturing out of our room, we soaked up the ambiance of the intimate hotel. With only eight chalets, we felt like we had the whole place to ourselves and when we did run into other guests, it was as if we were all apart of this insider circle. We shared cocktails with a lovely British couple in this chic lounge space, followed by round round two by the bonfire.

After a game drive, nothing beats a dip in the pool. Embracing the natural surroundings, Mkulumadzi built an infinity pool along the river, under the shade of the star chestnut and baobab trees.

For our final day on safari, the charming Mkulumadzi team surprised us with a romantic sundowner session. We  were spoiled with champagne and appetizers as the sky turned pink and the mountains silhouettes ran jagged across the horizon.

No matter if you love the classic side of safari camps or prefer your wildlife from the comforts of a luxurious suite, Robin Pope offers it all. We thought perhaps Mkulumadzi would have a similar rustic charm as RPS’s Nsefu camp but were dazzled with how modern and luxurious safari could be with our unforgettable stay in Majete National Park.

Much love from Majete,
Anne & Mike

Mkulumadzi invited us to be their guests; however, all opinions are our own.
