The Most Luxurious Hotel in Africa

Cape Town's Historic Steenberg Hotel

We could begin and end our blog on Steenberg Hotel with the statement: Steenberg was voted #1 luxury hotel in Africa by, but the grounds, amenities, and service were so incredible, we’re going to carry on with every dripping detail.
Set at the foothill of the Steenberg mountain on 60 hectares of vineyards with sweeping views from False Bay to nearby Cape Town, the hotel’s location in Constantia could not be better. In 1682 the intrepid and eccentric widower Catherina Ras inherited the land and it has been thriving ever since. Her home and farmhouses, in addition to a few new buildings keeping with the original Cape Dutch style, make up the exquisite 24-room hotel.

With a great for respect the property’s heritage, the interior design throughout Steenberg’s rooms utilizes an incredible selection of period pieces but also mixes in Cape contemporary accents for a space that feels fresh and sophisticated. This wing of the farmhouse lobby was equipped with books, brandy, and a fireplace for many a cozy evening.

Once we checked in, we were whisked away to the winery at the top of the hill for an incredible dinner at Bistro Sixteen82. We sat down at the wine bar under the glow of the red and white grape-vine-inspired light installation, only to be greeted with a highly-coveted bottle of Steenberg Reserve champagne and fragrant roses. Too sweet!

Just after we thought we’re sufficiently wined and dined, we got back to our room. The bubble bath was drawn, candles were lit, champagne was on ice, and our bed was artfully covered in rose petals.

We awoke in the morning to this amazing the view from our terrace. Over French-press coffee, we relaxed on our chaise lounges to admire the mountain scenery and watch the signature Steenberg geese go by.

After a fun day in the city (check out our review on Cape Town if you haven’t already), we set on leisurely bike ride around the property and through the vineyard. We loved how even details like a swimming pool were done in the Cape Dutch style and nestled into the environment. This was a private pool for one the Heritage Suites…the level of luxury at Steenberg is limitless.

Usually after going to a hotel restaurant a few times it can start to feel bit staid but Catharina’s was a total style chameleon. Breakfast in the sun room, lunch on the vine-covered terrace, and dinner by the fireplace made it an ever-changing treat. Not to mention, the food was five-star fabulous. Cape flair could make even an omelet unique by mixing in Malay spices and cured fish from the Atlantic.

On our last night we toasted our incredible stay with a champagne tasting at Gorgeous. Steenberg’s Graham Beck bubbly is the newest addition to the property and it was total seduction. Curling up to the bar with our sparkling wine expert, we learned about the nuances between each variety. If you ever come across the delicious Graham Beck Brut Zero, stock up!

For a honeymoon, Steenberg simply can’t disappoint. Their well-poised location and attentive staff will put the best of South Africa at your fingertips.

Much love from Constantia,

Anne & Mike
